Director, Communications & Marketing

Job Summary:
The Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced communications professional to serve as a leader in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of communications and marketing strategies while partnering with Department leadership to support and promote the Department’s values and strategic goals. Keys to success in this position are the ability to lead and nurture a team of communications and writing staff of varied experience levels, supporting their growth and development, while modeling and ensuring continuation of the team’s established service-oriented culture. Strong candidates will be curious and able to learn about complex scientific topics as well as translate them into accessible stories for various audiences; skilled at managing a broad portfolio of communications and marketing assets and products; capable of identifying strategic content areas for focus from within the department’s wide-ranging research and education work; and comfortable working with department leadership to set communication and marketing priorities.

Responsibilities: Assists with communications strategic planning and execution. Implements communications plans in support of division or unit goals and objectives.

  • 30% Assists in the development and implementation of communications focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives
  • 20% Develops communications campaigns, programs, and/or projects in alignment with strategic objectives
  • 10% Assists in the development and implementation of operating policies and procedures to promote communications in alignment with the strategic plan
  • 15% Directs and evaluates communications projects, including the design, production, and delivery of internal and external publications
  • 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% May serve as a liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing communications information and representing the interests of the unit
  • 5% Writes content for various Department mediums including web, intranet, social, internal and external communications.

Education:
Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree
Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Preferred field of study in communications, journalism, English, marketing, business or healthcare field.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications:
– 5+ years of marketing and/or communications experience in a professional setting
– Excellent writing and editing skills
– Experience managing and leading a team
– Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with effective and strategic use of multiple communication channels and platforms, including digital, print, video, broadcast, public presentations, interpersonal communication, etc.
– Ability to identify content priorities and manage multiple concurrent projects/tasks
– Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups

Preferred qualifications:
– Knowledge of medical research or experience in higher education academic setting preferred
– Demonstrated experience with large-scale internal communication projects and initiatives preferred
– Experience in tracking, interpreting, and applying insights from marketing analytics preferred
Work Type:
Full or Part Time: 80% – 100%

This position requires some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Minimum $85,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $85,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Additional Information:
