BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY: Supervise and direct the development, implementation, monitoring and measurement of internal and external communications programs and district marketing and branding efforts to ensure the District achieves its goal of being a destination district of excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, or journalism. Master’s degree preferred
- At least three years of experience in a leadership capacity in marketing, journalism, or communications
- Public school experience preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Sound organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to work under pressure, and ability to meet quick deadlines
- Demonstrated excellence in public speaking, writing, and editing
- Thorough knowledge of media relations, public relations functions, and principles of marketing
- Proficient with current trends in print/digital design, social media, web design, photography and videography
- Ability to be on-call after hours as needed
- Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic communications and public relations plan that supports the district’s mission and goals, including internal, external and crisis response.
- Serve as a district administrator responsible for mass communications platforms, including during crisis situations.
- Serve as a key member of the district crisis/emergency response team.
- Develop and execute an aggressive annual marketing campaign that advances the district’s goal of being a destination district of excellence; generate and analyze stakeholder insights, trends, market analysis and marketing best practices in support of the district’s mission and vision.
- Conceptualize and execute multi-channel campaigns, ensuring the alignment of communications and messaging across all channels.
- Identify the effectiveness and impact of current marketing initiatives with tracking and analysis; optimize as needed.
- Create and maintain the district’s brand and image as part of a comprehensive marketing program.
- Serve as the Public Information Officer and media spokesperson for the District through the Deputy Superintendent.
- Develop a proactive media strategy and maintain favorable working relationships with media. Serve as a resource for media, answering calls and basic questions, researching questions, formulating statements, coordinating interviews, and implementing crisis communications.
- Leverage all opportunities within the community through engagement and communications to discuss the district’s initiatives, neighborhood schools, curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and other programs to increase student achievement, enrollment, and attendance.
- Prepare and disseminate information to the public through the press, radio, television, magazines, special interest publications, community agencies, and Internet and social media channels.
- Oversee the planning of major events including convocation, graduations, Back to School Bash, teacher and staff appreciation functions, retiree banquets, dedications, open houses, campus tours, and other special events.
- Develop and administer department budgets based on documented needs; ensure programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Interface with governmental agencies, business and civic organizations, and the community to provide needed information and to promote the District’s initiatives.
- Communicate and collaborate with campus/department staff to enhance service, program development, and customer satisfaction.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law and local Board policy.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION:
- Oversee the hiring and evaluation of Communications Department staff
PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
- Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer, camera, audio/video equipment, and standard office equipment
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs (camera, equipment, tripod, lights, etc.)
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Work with frequent interruptions
- Travel district wide frequently and statewide occasionally
- Work occasional prolonged and irregular hours as work demands dictate
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment with no or very limited exposure to physical risk.
