Director, Community Engagement and Programs

Position Summary

The Department of Campus Safety’s Community Engagement and Program Director provides operational and programmatic support for community engagement and outreach initiatives. This individual will play a key role in coordinating and implementing community-building initiatives and conversations among students, staff, and community members that promote a deepening sense of belonging, trust, and connection with the department. In carrying out these responsibilities, this individual works to improve community empowerment, community campus safety relations, transparency, and accountability. The director will support the Director of Campus Safety by planning and organizing events and programs, managing outreach and communications, and carrying out day to day administrative tasks. This role ensures that the campus safety team’s input is seamlessly integrated where necessary and serves to promote an inclusive and engaging environment.

Essential Functions

Facilitate Programming and Campus Safety Initiatives:

  • Assist the Director in coordinating and implementing Campus Safety events and programs
  • Act as the liaison along with the Director between the Department of Campus Safety Team and various university units such as housing, athletics, residence life, and other organizations, ensuring that safety perspectives are aptly represented.
  • Convey crucial information from organizations to the department, maintaining a two-way communication channel.
  • Provide logistical support in coordinating meetings, managing an engagement calendar, as well as logisticsfor programs (e.g., taking meeting minutes, event set-up, food, location, securing guest speakers, emailing and posting flyers around campus, photography)
  • Coordinate and conduct outreach efforts to identify student groups and departments for future partnerships
  • Support development opportunities for partnerships by engaging community organizations,community leaders and other stakeholders in Denver
  • Assist with implementing digital and in-person strategies to collect feedback, recommendations, and input from community members
  • Represent the Campus Safety Community Engagement team at events and programs
  • Serve as a secondary liaison to work with the community on individual and group concerns.
  • Assistwith gathering feedback and input from discussions with community stakeholders
  • Research topics of importance, such as policing, community relations, accountability, safety, andresources for survivors of crime
  • Attend and participate in on and off-campus working groups
  • Provide assistance to the Director with the coordination of DPD to initiate and guide enforcement activities addressing key safety concerns like traffic, pedestrian safety, and quality of life

Support the Department’s Communications Efforts

  • Assist the Director with communications projects as needed
  • Assist with the community newsletter, including gathering content and growing audiences
  • Manage department social media accounts in coordination with the campus safety officers who volunteer to assist
  • Assist with the design of graphic materials including event posters, recruitment materials, safetyinformation, maps, and pamphlets
  • Maintain website updates
  • Support public information and transparency initiatives of the Director, including complaintforms and other feedback mechanisms
  • Assist with gathering and collecting data for annual reporting and CALEA accreditation
  • Create PowerPoints and other tools for presentations

Support Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

  • Assist with planning and implementing department events and Diversity Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) initiatives
  • Coordinate with the training sergeant to plan and execute diversity training events aimed to give department personnel a deeper insight into community issues and help officers develop sensitivity to cross-cultural matters
  • Assist with recruitment initiatives for the department to cultivate diverse, talented applicant pools and pipelines.

Additional Elements:

  • Engage with the University’s students, staff, and faculty on personal and public safety topics.
  • Collaborate with the Director to promote department events using various marketing tools.
  • Partner with staff and faculty to establish and nurture relationships with University/community groups and local organizations.
  • Coordinate the Campus Safety Advisory Board with the Director.
  • Organize and handle logistics for meetings involving staff and students, ensuring effective communication to all participants.
  • Exercise sound judgment to address and resolve minor to moderate conflicts or issues when they occur.

  • Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and connect with people with various backgrounds,identities, and lived experiences.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, collaborative, and relationship buildingskills.
  • Strong project management, administrative skills, and event planning experience
  • Strong listening, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively with strong detail orientation.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt in a changing and emergency -service centered environment.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms
  • Computer skills/experience in: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and Social Media. Familiarity withdesign programs like Canva, Adobe, or Sketch a plus.
  • Candidates must possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, plus 2-3 years of relative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of higher education and public safety is highly desirable.
  • Understanding and familiarity of issues regarding policing and groups from diverse populations,particularly from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, undocumented, first-generation college, and low-income, and international communities
  • Familiarity with criminal justice and community policing issues
  • Familiarity and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion work and/or bias incidents
  • Evenings, weekends, and holidays may occasionally be required.

Work Schedule

Exempt position. 37.5 hour work week, Schedule determined by Supervisor. Evenings, weekends, and holidays may occasionally be required.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 12.

Salary Range:
The salary range for the position is $75,000-$85,000

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
