Director, Criminal Sentencing Commission

The Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission is seeking to fill the position of Director of the Commission. The Director of the Criminal Sentencing Commission leads the operation of the Criminal Sentencing Commission and the staff. Additionally, the position serves as the primary contact for the Commission with the judicial, legislative, and executive branches, and other public and private entities.

The Criminal Sentencing Commission is located in the exquisite Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center, a restored 15-story historical building located along the Scioto River in downtown Columbus.

Authorized Chapter 181 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Criminal Sentencing Commission brings together judges, prosecuting and defense attorneys, behavioral health professionals, academics, corrections officials, law enforcement, victims’ advocates, community corrections experts, members of the General Assembly, and other leaders who share a direct interest in criminal sentencing. Duties
• Plans, directs, and administers the Criminal Sentencing Commission in conjunction with the Commission chairperson, assures compliance with enabling laws, develops meeting agendas, and develops the Commission’s budget.
• Develops staff policies and goals. Supervises staff, oversees legal and non-legal research, and conducts additional research as needed.
• Writes and edits Commission documents, including legislative drafting.
• Presents before the Justices of the Supreme Court of Ohio, testifies before the Ohio General Assembly, and prepares and conducts speeches to interest groups.

Qualifications
Experience

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree or Juris Doctor preferred.

Minimum of eight years of relevant experience and familiarity with the Executive and Legislative branches of state and local government required.

Extensive familiarity with state and local government practices, including how the General Assembly interacts with the Judicial Branch.
