Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

The Travelers Institute is the public policy division of Travelers. Our mission is to leverage Travelers’ industry and technical expertise, along with insights from private and public sector experts, to help address the most pressing challenges facing our industry, agents and brokers, our customers and the communities we serve. As Director, Economic & Public Policy Insights, you will combine public policy acumen, economic analysis, data expertise, business understanding, relationship building, and communication skills to develop public policy and economic presentations and programming. You will surface actionable insights and help audiences understand ‘the why’ underneath business trends and data. You will also contribute to a range of public policy initiatives and events.

What Will You Do?

  • Maintain subject matter expertise on relevant public policy and economic issues. Conduct in-depth research and analysis on trends including performance of the financial markets and outlook for the U.S. and global economies; tax policy, consumer spending and budgetary issues; as well as U.S. elections, legislative developments, and voter priorities.
  • Oversee and build ongoing relationships with key thought leaders in the legislative and regulatory arenas, research organizations, trade groups and others leading dialogue on public policy issues of interest to the industry.
  • Lead coordination, research, presentations and analysis for a wide range of Travelers Institute programs, including frequent economic and public policy speeches given by the President of the Travelers Institute and EVP for Public Policy at Travelers. Proactively develop new analysis and content for these presentations.
  • Serve as lead point of contact with industry groups hosting Travelers Institute presentations, managing relationships and logistics for each session.
  • Develop expertise on relevant internal data sources at Travelers, as well as external industry and government data sources. Proactively engage with internal research teams to evaluate new and emerging data sources. Serve as lead point of contact to third party data vendors, when appropriate.
  • Be a storyteller. Interpret and communicate findings to key stakeholders in compelling ways.
  • Bring these stories and analytic insights to life through appropriate visualization (charts, graphs, maps, etc.).
  • Ensure quality control measures and data checks to ensure accuracy of presentations.
  • Develop and maintain understanding of legal requirements associated with content included in Travelers Institute presentations. Work closely with Travelers’ legal and compliance teams on guidelines and reviews.
  • Travel up to 35 percent to attend Travelers Institute presentations and industry conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in economics preferred. Public policy, business or analytic studies would also align well with this role.
  • Four years of related economics, public policy, data or analytic experience.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and comfortable being accountable for decision making, while meeting deadlines. Flexibility and ability to work within changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail.
  • Proactively build and own professional business relationships.
  • Works independently as well as part of planning teams, possesses strong project management capabilities and uses critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Outstanding PowerPoint and Excel skills and experience creating dynamic and visual presentations.
  • Experience using other Microsoft Office tools (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with virtual and productivity platforms such as Zoom and MS Teams.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in in economics, public policy or relevant experience.
