Our Global Communications team is responsible for elevating and protecting the Alzheimer’s Association’s reputation, driving mission outcomes and inspiring and engaging constituents and staff.
The Director, Executive Communications, will be responsible for developing the organization’s overarching thought leadership platform to ensure the Association, its President and CEO, management staff, and volunteer leadership are positioned as key voices in the field, and the Association’s leadership role in care, support, advocacy, research is clearly communicated externally to national and international audiences as well as internally. Proactive collaboration with organizational leaders and identifying traditional and trending opportunities that carve a path for leadership positioning will be key to success. The individual will be tapped to lead, coordinate, connect dots and manage internal and external communications for the CEO, and as appropriate C-Suite members.
Responsibilities will include development and execution of executive communications strategy, including mining for and securing platform and thought leadership opportunities, narrative development, key message and speech writing, presentation development, briefing materials and staffing for internal and external appearances, video scripts, social media, etc.
Through powerful and creative storytelling, the Director, Executive Communications will partner with the President and CEO, the Chief of Staff for the President and CEO and the Vice President of Global Communications, as well as executive and colleagues across communications and marketing, and functional leaders to deliver an integrated communications strategy that supports key business priorities, and bring the President and CEO’s voices to life internally and externally.
Principal Duties
- In partnership with the vice president for global communications and the President and CEO’s chief of staff, develop and implement the organization’s first comprehensive executive communications function to proactively position our leaders and experts in ways that advance our mission and strategic objectives.
- Leads the strategy to identify and secure high-impact opportunities for our executive leadership that have the greatest impact toward our objectives. Evolves the strategy for ever increasing visibility and impact.
- Spearhead external communications activities to drive CEO and executive presence and efforts to advance our leadership narrative.
- Partner with the President and CEO and staff leaders clearly communicate priorities and support culture building for the organization.
- Work closely with the office of the President and CEO to define the communications cadence and calendar of internal and external communications activities.
- Staff the President and CEO at all communications-related activities as appropriate.
- Key activities on a regular basis include: strategic planning; content development, including messaging and speeches; editing social media; and project management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Expertise in executive communications and experience working with high-level executives
- Proven ability to work with executives to drive their external presence in ways that deliver on an organization’s mission and goals.
- Proven ability to lead the development and implementation of a marketing and communications program that includes executive positioning.
- Outstanding writing and editing skills
- Creativity, with experience across all forms of content creation (written, video, etc.)
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, problem solve, think strategically, connect dots, and implement efficiently
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, problem-solve and affect positive change while maintaining a high level of flexibility, professionalism, and integrity
- Self-starter who takes initiative with minimal direction
- Thrive in a dynamic, high-energy environment and able to lead cross-functional project teams with high attention to detail
Minimum Requirements
- Ten (10) years of professional experience
- Leadership experience in nonprofit, government, public health and/or corporate environments.
- Experience supporting executive communications; social media experience
- Experience leading or working with internal teams, and cross-functional working groups
- Travel up to 25% of the time
