Director, Government & NYC Community Relations

Summary

The Director, Government & Community Relations is responsible for building and maintaining government and community relations critical to the advancement of NYPA goals in NYC, including to promote internally and externally NYPA’s projects, and educate the public.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate productive relationships with NYC elected officials, business leaders, and civic groups to hear their concerns, keep them apprised of NYPA’s initiatives, and leverage company goals.
  • Review, enhance and oversee all NYPA community and educational programs throughout NYC to further NYPA’s goals, projects, and mission.
  • Lead or participate in external groups and coalitions that further the Authorities operations and policies.
  • Represent NYPA in various community organizations to drive policy that benefits NYPA and our customers.
  • Share any NYPA related news immediately and be prepared to handle regional crises and create an emergency notification system to notify local, state, and federal officials through all means necessary.
  • Develop, coach, mentor, and lead team of legislative & community affairs professionals

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability working in high level relationships with elected and other officials and with community leaders and opinion makers. Ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential material.
  • Highly effective verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills; strong public speaking skills.
  • Effectively handle competing priorities and ability to change focus as needed.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to problem-solve and effectively operate within a large, dynamic environment with experience in senior level administrative management.
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects within varying deadlines.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Business, government affairs, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years; experience with demonstrated advancement in responsibility in public, government, or community relations and engagement.
  • Minimum 3 years supervising/managing a team
  • Utility or energy experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 50% travel, primarily within NY State
  • Valid NY State driver’s license

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
