Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of University Communications is responsible for the strategic management of the University’s overall public relations and reputation management activities. The department provides leadership, counsel and services to over 200 communicators across campus and works with those communicators to ensure a unified campus-wide communications strategy. Areas within University Communications include: Executive Communications, Media Relations, Internal Communications, Content Development, Social Media, Marketing Communications, Strategic Resources, Issues Management, Community Relations, Public Records, the UNC-Chapel Hill Visitor’s Center, and UNC Creative.
Position Summary
UNC-Chapel Hill’s University Communications department is seeking a Director of Digital Planning and Production to lead the sharing of web content on UNC.edu, The Well, its newsletter and other campus websites and materials. This is a perfect position for someone who has strong editorial judgment and planning skills, understands the web content creation process and who wants to share compelling digital storytelling packages about the people, programs, research and activities at the nation’s first public university. The ideal candidate will also be able to work well across teams and with content creators, publish on deadline, understand web user experience, follow digital best practices and be a strong editor. WordPress experience is a plus.
The Director of Digital Planning and Production is responsible for shepherding the execution and distribution of all content on The Well, its newsletter and UNC.edu to highlight Carolina as a leading global public research university. The director brings the work of multiple teams together into cohesive digital storytelling packages. The director will work with the Director of Visual Communications and Production and the Director of Content Strategy to determine what type of content will best convey the messages, how messages will fit into the regular editorial calendar and help ensure our content reaches key constituencies. This position is assisted by three direct reports with web and production duties, as well as a dotted line relationship with a senior editor.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience with digital content creation and web publishing. This includes developing and implementing effective web strategies and execution, maintaining web platforms, and coordinating content placement developed by multiple teams.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience maintaining web platforms and effectively managing the technical aspects of a complex website, in coordination with IT professionals.
