Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Elementary Literacy drives student outcomes in early literacy for KIPP Capital Region. In partnership with the Teaching and Learning team, the DEL will own the design, management, and execution of the early literacy program, ensuring we are providing high-quality, anti-racist literacy instruction to our youngest KIPPsters.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Owns program design, to include setting and monitoring progress towards program goals, creation of key program deliverables (curriculum implementation and coaching tools, formal professional development calendar, etc.) in collaboration with the Director of K-8 Academics and Chief Academic Officer.
  • Ensures that curriculum and pedagogy are grounded in the Science of Reading across all of our early literacy classrooms.
  • Leads implementation of a high-quality literacy curriculum, including all aspects of word recognition, language comprehension, and writing in grades K-2. Leads implementation of Tier 2 literacy curriculum 3-4.
  • Coaches school-based instructional leaders in curriculum implementation and data-driven instruction.
  • Creates data-driven action plans that promote student achievement in word recognition, language comprehension, and writing and ensure that instruction is driving equitable outcomes.
  • Observes instructional practices in schools to identify and address curriculum design and professional development strengths and gaps.
  • Designing structures and systems for school leaders and coaches to support content knowledge development and curriculum implementation.

  • You’ll be proficient in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office (Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint/Slides, Outlook/Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.), including Advanced Excel skills, and other office productivity tools, with aptitude to learn new software and systems
  • You can operate effectively in-person and in virtual environments, such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, WebEx, Google Meets, etc.
  • You will be a continuous learner, who takes responsibility for behavior, mistakes, and results; learning from successes and failures, and teaches others to do the same.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Master’s degree in Education, Literacy, Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, or a related field is preferred.
  • 5+ Years of Teaching experience in K-4 ELA with a clear record of success.
  • 3+ years of Leadership experience, preferably in K-4 ELA with demonstrated excellence in instructional leadership, including instructional coaching, leading professional development, and student outcomes.
  • Preferred experience working directly with students, preferably required in the charter, private, or public school environment.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.

Additional Information
