Director of Inclusive Teaching Practices

Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL):

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs within the Office of the Provost, the current mission of the Office of Teaching and Learning is to support faculty in the advancement of transformative, inclusive, and impactful teaching and learning across all disciplines and modalities to actualize DU’s educational promise to all students. The OTL provides central faculty development support focusing on advancing skills in course design, inclusive teaching, effective university-level pedagogy, and academic assessment.

Position Summary:

The Director for Inclusive Teaching Practices reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning in the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) and provides proactive and responsive leadership, direction, and programming that advances the University of Denver’s commitment to inclusive excellence and inclusive pedagogy. The Director for Inclusive Teaching Practices is charged with creating, implementing, and assessing strategic faculty development opportunities, online resources, and providing consultations for faculty members, academic administrators, academic departments, and allied offices.

This is a full-time (12 month) staff position with full benefits. The Director of Inclusive Teaching Practices will collaborate with the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other allied offices to lead curricular and classroom-level efforts related to our values of creating an inclusive community of care.

Essential Functions:

Inclusive Teaching Faculty Development Programming and Resources

  • Develop, lead, facilitate, and assess a curriculum of inclusive teaching professional development opportunities including but not limited to: faculty learning communities, workshops, short courses, institutes, and trainings.
  • Produce educational content including online resources, blogs, newsletter content, and open-source materials.
  • Maintain and improve existing portfolio of programs and resources including the Faculty Institute for Inclusive Teaching, the Inclusive Teaching Practices Modules, the Teaching for Inclusion and Equity Micro-credential program, and the Neurodiversity Institute.
  • Assist with ongoing assessment to determine teaching-related needs and initiate the creation and facilitation of new programs, resources, or initiatives to meet those needs.

Proactive, Responsive and Reactive Faculty & Administration Support

Real-time confidential teaching and learning support for faculty members and academic departments; real-time consultative support to academic leaders to advance DU’s commitment to inclusive excellence:

  • Provides comprehensive research-based consultations to promote inclusive pedagogical practices across all disciplines of study and learning environments.
  • Creates and provides formative resources to faculty and academic administrators following critical incidents in learning environments.
  • Supports faculty members in addressing critical aspects of course design, classroom management, and assessment of teaching and learning to support the creation of inclusive learning environments.
  • Collaborates in real-time with academic leaders and partnering offices across campus (e.g., Division of DEI, EOIX, Student Affairs) to develop and/or update faculty supports around specific campus incidents that may arise, and for which there are no existing, up-to-date resources.
  • Assist with OTL messaging and consult as needed on institution-wide messaging to support faculty in responding to current events involving justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Serves on search committees related to the advancement of inclusive excellence at DU.

Collaboration within and outside the OTL

The Director supports OTL staff and the Assistant Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning in initiating and sustaining collaborative relationships and projects, among and between OTL staff and university faculty.

  • Participate as a collaborative team member to implement OTL events and programs.
  • Collaborate on campus-wide initiatives that align with role.
  • Integrate the specialization of colleagues into delivery of content and pedagogy.
  • Actively initiate and participate across areas of expertise among OTL staff.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees as aligned with the role.
  • Contribute to OTL blogs and podcasts as aligned with the role.
  • Submit programming assessment findings to inform annual report.

Inclusive Teaching National Trends and Practices

Stay abreast of national trends and practices by participating in national conferences and engaging in research necessary to share DU’s achievements around inclusive teaching with the broader academic community:

  • Contribute to scholarship and in-house publications in areas of expertise,
  • Contribute to national dialogues and scholarship by presenting at conferences and participating in relevant national organizations such as:
    • National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE)
    • Professional Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD)
  • Serve as a consultant to research grants (e.g., NSF, IRISE) as needed.
  • Stay abreast of trends in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in higher education and seek out professional development necessary to maintain currency and expertise.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of strong practices and scholarship in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), particularly as it relates to classroom practices, course design, classroom engagement and management, and faculty/student interactions.
  • Familiarity with scholarship on inclusive pedagogy, high impact practices (HIPs, as defined by the AAC&U), and faculty development, and translating these practices to different disciplines.
  • Advanced facilitation and conflict management skills, including the ability to maintain collaborative and confidential relationships. Possess advanced to expert interpersonal skills and ability to develop cross-campus relationships to promote effective and inclusive collaboration that is mindful of the population(s) being served.
  • Experience providing faculty development workshops, developing resources to support effective university teaching, leading faculty learning communities, and/or facilitating peer-mentoring groups.
  • Able to explain (in writing and verbally) application of inclusive teaching practices to the university classroom to non-specialists, as well as prepare reports for various audiences.
  • Able to manage multiple complex tasks without direct supervision.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated success with project management.
  • Experience teaching and/or developing curriculum.
  • Demonstrated commitment to building environments where Indigenous, international, multilingual, LGBTQIA, students of color, and other historically excluded students and faculty are valued, respected, and included.
  • Demonstrated knowledge about faculty development challenges and assets specific to faculty from diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree
  • At least three (3) years of experience in higher education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a university faculty member
  • Record of scholarly presentations and publications related to faculty development or inclusive teaching.

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, occasional evenings and weekends. This is an on-campus position, with the expectation that the person hired will reside in or relocate to the Denver metro area. OTL staff may work remotely for up to two days a week when the nature of the work allows (after an initial period of working fully on-site).

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 14.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $110,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
