General Job Description:

The Director of Indian Education will be a critical part of the district’s leadership team and is responsible for executing the district’s strategic plan in support of Indian Education. This position is responsible for building a district-wide culture of inclusion and celebration of Native American and Pueblo heritages, as well as to ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local laws regarding the education and adequacy of programs for Native students. The Director oversees the work of the district to improve education in compliance with the Indian Education Act, Martinez-Yazzie, SB250, HB5, and other relevant laws and rulings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee Implementation of Strategic Plan: Articulate a strategy for integrating and aligning the Indian Education services to advance the district’s strategic plan.
  2. Performance Management & Continuous Improvement: In partnership with their supervisor and alignment with the Strategic Plan, establish goals and metrics for Indian Education services. Establish systems and routines to monitor progress against goals and opportunities to adjust in response to formative data. Create and oversee distribution of the BPS annual Tribal Education Status Report (TESR) and provide guidance to school leaders and relevant personnel for interpreting and acting in response to the data.
  3. Design and Implement Technical Assistance for Schools in providing Indian Education services to students: Work in partnership with the Instructional Pathways Director to ensure that schools have the necessary resources, instructional materials, and curriculum to provide opportunities for a sufficient education for all Native American students including those at-risk. Serve as a resource for all matters related to culturally informed curriculum and the adoption of approved materials. Partner with school leaders to ensure that Native American students have access to opportunities so that students can make informed civic, economic, and social choices, understand the issues that affect their communities, and appreciate their cultural heritage. Provide leadership and support for schools and departments to implement culturally-based research best instructional practices and approved Keres language programs.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination: Establish and maintain strong, collaborative, and candid relationships with community stakeholders, including but not limited to Tribal Leaders. Plan and engage in activities to improve communication and partnership between the school district, Tribal education departments, and Tribal communities. Model collaborative leadership with colleagues to ensure alignment and integration services. Effectively applies change management theory and strategy with a wide range of diverse stakeholders, internally and externally, to plan, implement, and manage programs and services to ensure that Native students are provided with effective programs and services. Provide written/oral reports to parents, students, and Tribal Administrators.
  5. Team Leadership: Foster a growth oriented, inclusive, and positive environment while keeping employees and management accountable to district policies, procedures and guidelines. Effectively oversee and manage department budgets. Complete other tasks as deemed appropriate by the CEO and direct supervisor. Ensure that all functions of the department and school sites are compliant with federal, state, and local requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities: All staff and students as assigned by the CEO

Required Qualifications:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  2. A valid New Mexico PED administrative license.
  3. Ability to pass employment verification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Masters degree or higher.
  2. Five years of experience working with Pueblo or Native American populations.
  3. Three years of experience in district-level or tribal administration working with Bilingual/ELD/ESL programs.
  4. Bilingual Keres or Spanish preferred.
  5. Previous experience as principal or assistant principal.
  6. Classroom teaching experience serving Native American and/or Hispanic students in an integrated setting.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air-quality. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. Travel to facilities throughout the district is integral to the job.

Safety and Health:

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.)

Equipment/Material handled:

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology, standard office equipment, and basic Office Computer program abilities. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)
