The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Finance and Operations, the Director of Information Technology and Data Analytics (IT) provides leadership, vision, and management to the IT department. The incumbent is responsible for the strategic direction and management of all aspects of technology, cybersecurity, data analytics, and reporting for the administrative units of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) including on-line application processes (Technolutions Slate); CRMs (including SalesForce and various career development platforms); application development/integration needs; electronic document management; support and maintenance of the GSAS server infrastructure (hosted VM instances and appliances), desktop computers and other hardware; IT vendor relations, software issues; and the development of new technical solutions. The incumbent develops strategies for effective business intelligence strategies and analytics solutions; builds, configures, implements, and maintains reporting systems, dashboards, and performance metrics to support GSAS decision-making and reporting. Oversees the proper functioning of IT and AV equipment in the Graduate Student Center and the Graduate Writing Studio. Responsible for GSAS compliance with university IT privacy and security policies and administrative software licenses.

Responsibilities

TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT (25%)

Responsible for the GSAS server infrastructure , desktop computers, telecommunications, and other related IT hardware. Ensures the integrity and continual operation of the GSAS external services, including CRMs, Appliances, Drupal, and VM infrastructure. Responsible for the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrading, security and support of all GSAS IT systems, including servers, PCs, operating systems, telephones, software applications, and peripherals. Oversees the smooth functioning of IT and AV equipment in the Graduate Student Center, Graduate Writing Studio, and other GSAS spaces. Responsible for the ordering, acquisition, inventorying, and disposition of hardware and software. Works collaboratively with other University IT departments to deliver IT services and support to GSAS. Provides expertise and support during system upgrades, installations, conversions, and file maintenance.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (25%)

Administers and supports the development of various GSAS CRM platforms for admissions, student affairs, and career development, including the creation of workflows, forms, entities and elements. Writes custom code, as necessary, to customize and integrate platforms with other other data sources using various connector tools. Provides recommendations to maintain and improve data integrity and works with GSAS offices to implement and track such efforts. Provides expertise and support for current GSAS applications as well as identifies and evaluates new systems and application platforms to make recommendations for innovation and change. Identifies IT and data projects that are necessary to meet the strategic priorities and mission of GSAS.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT (20%)

Analyzes the complex business needs presented by GSAS offices and recommends technical solutions. Works with GSAS offices to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot electronic data feeds across various systems. Develops, implements, and secures custom IT solutions to GSAS business needs as required. Oversees the provision of end-user services, including help desk and technical support services. Ensures the creation and maintenance of all written documentation, including system and user manuals, license agreements, and documentation of modifications and upgrades. Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Finance and Operations, negotiates and administers IT vendor and consultant contracts and service agreements. Develops standard operating procedures and best practices, including providing written protocols and guidance to end-users. Works with GSAS staff to develop strategies and plans to enhance client services, improve user effectiveness, and foster innovation.

STRATEGIC ANALYTICS (15%)

In conjunction with the Dean of Finance and Operations, delivers data analysis, data visualization, and business intelligence to the Office of the Dean, senior staff, and other critical partners. Establishes data requirements and designs, develops, produces, and maintains queries and other reports to support GSAS business functions and data analysis needs. Identifies, analyzes, and interprets trends or patterns in complex data sets using statistical techniques. Builds SQL statements and stored procedures. Works on special projects as deemed relevant, and be available as needed for technical and other support during critical periods.

COMPLIANCE/INFORMATION SECURITY (10%)

Collaborates with CUIT on policy compliance, security, and risk assessment and management. Ensures GSAS applications, systems, and databases are compliant with the University’s ITRM and RSAM processes as well as relevant federal, state, and local data security policies. Develops and implements all GSAS IT policies and procedures, including those for architecture, security, standards, purchasing, and service provision. Develops and maintains a business recovery plan (BRP) to ensure timely and effective restoration of data and IT services in the event of a disaster. Communicates regularly with executive management and all GSAS staff regarding information services and systems. Liaises with CUIT and the Registrar on roles and access for SIS/SSOL and Desktop Reporting on behalf of GSAS units. Assists in resolving and troubleshooting access issues.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/OTHER (5%)

Improves and acquires skill sets through self-training and approved courses to move forward with advances in technology. Keeps current with the latest technologies and determines what new technology solutions and implementations will serve GSAS business and system needs. Creates and maintains professional relationships within and outside Columbia University to assist with GSAS technology plans and personal skill development. Other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 5-7 years of related experience, preferably in a university setting or other complex organization;
  • Must be detail-oriented, able to collaborate with a variety of people, and present a positive customer service attitude. Requires excellent attention to detail, good judgment, excellent organizational and project management skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Accuracy in handling detailed work and excellent follow-through required. Demonstrated organizational ability, including ability to work under pressure with short and changing deadlines while ensuring timely and accurate execution;
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets, make findings relevant, and explain data and technology to a general audience;
  • Ability to conceive of larger picture in relation to strategic planning required. Sensitivity in handling confidential material required;
  • Ability to perform off-hour work on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Ability to promote innovative workflow management a plus. Demonstrated experience with creating, maintaining, upgrading, and securing a VM infrastructure preferred. Preference for individuals with knowledge of federal privacy and information security regulations. Familiarity and experience with AV equipment support highly desired.
