Job Description
The Director of Leadership Development (DLD) drives the equitable school leadership pipeline development for KIPP Capital Region. In partnership with the KIPP Capital Region Teaching and Learning and Talent teams, the DLD will own the design, management, and execution of the Principal in Residence program and other leadership pipeline programs, ensuring we are developing a robust pipeline of leaders prepared with the skills and competencies to lead high-performing schools.

The DLD will establish KIPP Capital Region as a premiere destination for leaders and aspiring teacher-leaders in the Capital Region area. This role will be responsible for the visioning and implementation of leadership development programming across the organization, partnering with the Talent, Teaching & Learning, Operations teams as well as schools to design programming for leaders at differing levels. While the role’s early focus will be on instructional leadership, over time, the DLD will build out leadership programming for all areas of the organization. This could include programming like an Operations Fellowship Program to mirror the PIR program in the development of Directors of Operations.
About the KIPP Capital Region Principal in Residence Program
The Principal in Residence (PIR) program is a two-year residency that prepares rising leaders to open a new KIPP school or become a successor leader at an existing KIPP school. The program combines on-the-job learning, professional development, and mentorship and coaching opportunities to prepare participants to create and lead excellent schools.
WHO YOU ARE:
- A leader who owns program vision and design, including goal setting and systems for progress monitoring, creation of key program deliverables (leader standards and performance benchmarking tools, formal professional development calendar, etc)
- A perceptive professional capable of creating and managing systems for team collaboration and project management (e.g., meeting structures, document management, project plans, etc.).
- A creative thinker, innovator, and problem-solver, who designs and executes a communication plan to invest stakeholders in support of program goal
- You are a collaborator who will collaborate with cross-functional teams (academics, analytics, talent, etc.) to garner appropriate resources and supports for the program
- A effective communicator who will design and execute a communication plan to invest stakeholders in support of program goals
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Holds the PIR accountable to progression on Development Roadmap of skills aligned to School Leader readiness
- Provides direct coaching to the PIR including bi-weekly check-ins and bi-weekly observations of the PIR in practice
- Provides the vision for PIR formal professional development; may lead some professional development content
- Evaluates the PIR against performance benchmarks
- Develops and sends monthly PIR communication to drive accountability, action and sharing of best practices
- Codifies best practices and exemplar models in support of PIR development..
- Provides direct coaching to the mentor school leaders including observations of the mentor school leader in practice
- Provides the vision for mentor school leader formal professional development in mentor school leader standards; may lead some professional development content
- Develops and sends monthly mentor school leader communication to drive accountability, action and sharing of best practices
- Codifies best practices and exemplar models in support of mentor school leader development
FOR EXTRA CREDIT:
- In collaboration with the Talent and Teaching & Learning team, build out development programming for Assistant Principals, Academic Deans, and Instructional Coaches (Emerging/Next Up Leader work)
- Partners with the Managing Directors of Schools on leadership development for current principals
- Partner with KIPP Foundation on leadership coaching for selected KIPP Capital Region leaders and ensure coaching support is equitable and governed by a standard set of guidelines
- Assist teachers with certification and other related development questions to ensure the strongest teachers are in lead roles
- Serve as the liaison with external teacher and leader development programs, such as Relay and local universities
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
- At least 6 years of experience leading large teams and direct people management; 3+ years of experience as a principal strongly preferred
- Evidence of significant and consistent personal and professional achievement
- Possesses a deep commitment to both racial and educational equity; supports the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP serves; holds self and others on team accountable for centering equity
- Examines the impact of his/her identities, biases, assumptions, and behaviors on his/her power and privilege, interactions with others, work and leadership in the organization; able to recognize, immediately respond, and consistently remedy interpersonal and systemic bias and inequities
- Demonstrated excellence in school leadership, including instructional coaching, leading professional development, and developing other leaders
- Demonstrated proficiency in leading through change, executing on major initiatives, and leading cross-departmental work
- Excellent relationship builder with demonstrated experience managing diverse stakeholders, leading change, and mobilizing others and creating champions to support an organizational mission
- Ability to analyze and use qualitative and quantitative data on a regular basis to drive decision-making; strong judgment
Additional Information
The base salary range for this exempt position is $109,300 – $120,800
