Job Summary:
Director of Major Gifts is a member of the School of Law’s frontline fundraising team and is responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of gifts of $50,000 and above from alumni, parents, and friends of the school. The position will manage a portfolio of 175 alumni donors and prospects and help to plan for the School’s Comprehensive Campaign in tandem with the University Campaign. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Advancement.
Essential Functions:
- Manage a portfolio of approximately 175 prospects/suspects capable of gifts in the $50,000 to $500,000 range.
- Conduct a minimum of 125-150 substantive contacts annually with responsibility for managing communications and follow-up, including maintaining detailed activity reports and moving management information on all prospects in the portfolio.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean and the Dean to craft solicitations tailored to the needs of the school and the donor’s interest.
- In addition to meeting a major gift goal of $250,000, incorporate annual fund and planned gift conversations as appropriate. The goal will increase each year commiserate with experience.
- Determine when the dean should meet with donors and create briefing memos in preparation for those meetings.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.
Travel
Flexibility to travel, mostly on a regional basis. Occasional weekend and evening work will be necessary as well as travel nationally.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 4-6 years’ experience in fundraising or related field (e.g., sales), preferably in higher education.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, thesalary range for this position is $96,000 – $110,000 annually. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
