Summary
The University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor is one of the world’s largest academic research libraries. The library seeks a talented and service-oriented individual to serve as the Director for the Sales, Marketing, and Outreach (SMO) department of Michigan Publishing . The Director of Sales Marketing & Outreach is a key member of the senior leadership team of Michigan Publishing. In addition to playing an important role in strategic planning, the position also develops, oversees, and directs all programs and activities related to sales, marketing, and outreach.
The SMO Director supports three units in Michigan Publishing. The University of Michigan Press (UMP) which produces 100 books a year, including 80 monographs in the humanities and social sciences; Michigan Publishing Services (MPS) which is a service for campus entities and mission-aligned publishers, including hosting of collections sold to libraries and open access journals; and Deep Blue Repository and Research Data Services (DBRRDS) which is a service for campus faculty and students related to the sharing of research data and documents.
With oversight and responsibility for the department’s marketing and sales budget, the SMO Director provides leadership for their team, which includes both remote and on-site staff. Internally, the position works especially closely with the Acquisitions and Production departments as well as the product owners for Michigan Publishing Services and Deep Blue Repository and Research Data Services. Externally, the position works closely with the Press many external vendor partners.

Responsibilities*
Supervision
- Recruit, train, and supervise staff
- Hire and ensure supervision of student interns
- Maximize the performance of distribution partners, wholesalers, and retailers
Operations
- Oversee content of print, web, and social media messaging
- Oversee metadata organization and distribution systems
- Manage design and scheduling of promotional dissemination
Organizational leadership
- Collaborate with Publishing leadership team to set strategy for the organization
- Develop and oversee the implementation of sales and marketing strategy
- Set and oversee annual sales and marketing budgets
Change management
- Remain current with new trends and developments in academic publishing
- Support the professional development of staff
- Ensure that processes and systems are regularly assessed and updated
Required Qualifications*
- A bachelor’s degree and at least five (5) years of relevant professional work experience
- Availability to travel to as many as five events per year, mostly in US and Canada
- Demonstrated success in developing effective sales and marketing programs
- Experience of motivating and leading teams in a collaborative environment
- Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the significance of differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience of working in a publishing environment
- Curiosity about new publishing models, especially open access
Work Schedule
This position will be full-time, 40 hours/week; typically Monday – Friday day-time shifts. The marketing team typically works a hybrid schedule with some days in office and some days of remote work.
