Dean of Students: Social Justice Education

In support of University and Divisional mission, vision and goals, Social Justice Education (SJE) engages the campus community with resources to develop and apply knowledge and skills for positive interaction across difference. We offer in-person programs and services to students. Based on social science research, our efforts support participants’ gaining a deeper understanding of their own and others’ identities, as well as providing opportunities for them to engage constructively across similarities and difference. Position Summary

The Director provides leadership and vision for social justice educational efforts for students. In collaboration with campus and community partners, the Director coordinates the ongoing development, implementation and assessment of a coherent portfolio of relevant programs and services.

The Director will work in deeply collaborative ways to: (1) utilize best practices to collaboration with divisional and campus partners to create and implement social justice education training program for students; (2) support and advocate for, students from historically underrepresented communities, students from a variety of marginalized positionalities and first-generation students; and (3) foster the public good as centrally informed by a commitment to racial, ethnic, cultural, and other social equity outcomes on our campus and beyond.

The Director will work evenings and weekends, as needed. This position is a full-time, 1.0 FTE position reporting to the Associate Dean of Students.

Essential Functions

Student Social Justice Education

  • Provide strategic visioning for social justice education for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Facilitate a comprehensive assessment plan for social justice education for students
  • Coordinate current signature programs, events and/or services
  • In collaboration with the departments involved in DEI, integrate social justice education into curriculum, orientation, residential experience, and workshops, expanding saturation of opportunities each year
  • Work in partnership with the DOS, Assoc. DOS, DOS Office, SAIE Divisional leadership, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, FIRST@DU, and The Cultural Center

Program Development and Management

  • Direct divisional DEI-related dialogic programming (DUDialogUes program)
  • Design and implement intergroup relation conversations to support learning across similarities and differences
  • Support Assistant Director of Social Justice Education in the design and implementation of DEI programs and training for students
  • Develop program-relevant needs assessment and program evaluation to inform efforts and document impact

Supervision

  • Supervise, train and evaluate full-time professional staff, graduate student assistants, and undergraduate students
  • Provide oversight of SJE student staff experience (training and supervision)
  • Initiate professional development and continuous improvement for SJE team

Administration

  • Provide proactive/reactive DEI information and resources regarding students to campus, including individuals, offices and events
  • Understand and implement social justice training best practices. Maintain knowledge of current research and best practices in DEI
  • Lead and manage the SJE budget
  • Support Associate Dean of Students (Assoc. DOS) in developing University-wide policies, philosophies, structures, practices and procedures that contribute to an institutionalization of ongoing DEI-related development
  • Provide DEI and social justice content for
    • The Registered Student Organizations Harm Reduction workshop requirement (Intervene 2.0)
    • Incoming undergrad online course requirement
  • On-Call responsibilities as DoS Leadership Team member
  • Develop and maintain relationships with individuals and units/organizations on and beyond campus, for collaboration toward area goals
  • Support identity-based crisis response and lead education

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of student development for marginalized student populations and the ability to translate student development theory and social justice theory into practice.
  • Demonstrated excellent English written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrable experience in working with both historically excluded and dominant identity populations.
  • Ability to build and strengthen key campus and community collaborations and partnerships, and to link those relationships to larger divisional and institutional goals.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in intercultural communication, multicultural education, social psychology, sociology, higher education or other relevant field
  • Demonstrated commitment to and progressive advancement of DEI
  • Demonstrated advocacy and leadership related to racial, ethnic, gender and/ other intersectional identities
  • Minimum 5 years of administrative and direct professional program management experience in the area of diversity and/or inclusive excellence
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and evaluating DEI-related educational programs
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate or terminal degree in relevant field
  • Experience supervising, evaluating, and training professional staff
  • Experience with strategic planning, assessment, and budget management
  • Three to five (3-5) years’ experience with developing and providing DEI related content in formal academic areas (e.g., for-credit courses, CEU settings, etc)
  • Active regional/national-level involvement in the professional field of DEI education (beyond merely holding organizational memberships)

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with some nights and weekends.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 12.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $75,000-$85,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
