Director of Sustainability – Construction Operations & Data Center Equipment

Within CO+I, the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) organization is responsible for global datacenter engineering, procurement, construction, cost and planning execution, delivering IT capacity to Microsoft customers worldwide.

The EPC organization is seeking an experienced Director of Sustainability to lead the development and implementation of sustainability strategies for construction operations and datacenter equipment, who will report to the CO+I EPC Center of Excellence Leader. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving sustainability strategy & initiatives across the entire construction value chain, from materials procurement and construction processes to the design and operation of datacenter equipment, and lead a team of innovative and technical leaders. This is a critical role in our company’s sustainability efforts and offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on reducing the environmental impact of our construction and datacenter operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of the company’s sustainability strategy for construction operations and datacenter equipment, in alignment with the overall sustainability goals and objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of construction and datacenter operations, working with cross-functional teams to drive implementation.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure progress against sustainability goals, and report progress to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact throughout the construction value chain.
  • Develop and manage relationships with external partners, including sustainability experts, NGOs, and other organizations, to drive innovation and identify new opportunities for sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with sustainability-related regulations and reporting requirements and engage with regulatory bodies and industry groups to advocate for strong policies and standards.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to internal teams and stakeholders to drive engagement and embed sustainability principles throughout the organization.
  • Communicate the company’s sustainability initiatives and progress to internal and external stakeholders, including customers, investors, and employees.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Operations, Finance or related field AND 8+ years work experience in program management, process management, process improvement
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years management (e.g., people, project, process, vendor, change) experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in sustainability, with a focus on construction and/or datacenter operations.
  • Background Check Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.
    • These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of sustainability frameworks, standards, and reporting requirements, including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) and Customer Data Platform (CDP).
  • Experience developing and implementing sustainability strategies and initiatives in a complex, global organization.
  • Experience working with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders to drive sustainable practices and reduce environmental impact throughout the value chain.
  • Leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire teams to achieve outstanding results.
  • Communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and external partners.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data and make sound decisions.
  • Passion for sustainability and a commitment to driving meaningful change.

Business Program Management M6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $124,800 – $266,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $159,000 – $292,200 per year.
