Purpose
Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Communications, the Director – Corporate Communications is a demanding and high-profile position responsible for driving strategic communications supporting AVANGRID’s business objectives with external stakeholders and employees. The position will also work closely with parent company representatives (Iberdrola S.A.) headquartered in Madrid, Spain. Main areas of responsibilities include media relations, external communications, and some varying communications.
Oversees direct reports, external resources, and partners with key stakeholders to achieve timely execution of all programs/efforts. Develops measurement protocols to ensure effective use of resources and performance data to determine effectiveness of programs and implementations. Monitors industry and discipline trends, tools, and technologies and implements innovative traditional, event, and social/on-line marketing initiatives.
Responsibilities
- In collaboration with key stakeholders and in alignment with a global strategy responsible for strategically developing communications to achieve the AVANGRID objectives.
- Responsible for building image and company reputation working in collaboration with all necessary departments and business functions.
- Responsibilities also include a focus on other communications related to company positioning, strategic initiatives, executive level support, corporate earnings, and other corporate matters.
- Oversees external communications including developing press releases, interacting with media, preparing executives for media interviews, and a variety of other projects, including internal and external events, etc.
- Responsible for crisis communications and adept at managing complex and sensitive business issues.
- The Director will work with employees at all levels throughout the organization and is relied upon to provide decisive recommendations and strategic counsel as needed.
- The Director will be responsible for relationships with key business, financial, and other influential media that cover the company, the energy industry, and other areas of interest to AVANGRID; handle proactive and reactive media relations efforts in a quick and efficient manner to ensure positive media coverage for AVANGRID and its subsidiaries. Act as company spokesperson as needed on behalf of relevant communications programs and issues.
- The Director will coordinate communications initiatives with Iberdrola S.A and AVANGRID Renewables in the U.S. to ensure consistency in messaging and image.
- The Director will, at times, serve as a representative in several capacities, including making statements to the media, either giving (or media training other senior executives for) interviews and serving as gatekeeper for any and all company information that is to be disclosed to the public.
- The position requires the ability to quickly facilitate all media requests, including but not limited to, specific questions on performance, executives, strategy, products, policies, and historical perspectives, among others.
- Effectively manages communications staff for high performance.
- Manages budget.
Skills and Requirements
Education & Experience Required :
- Bachelor’s Degree required (Master’s Degree preferred) with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience preferred.
- Thorough understanding of communications strategy and be able to handle external communications and media relations.
- Superior writing and editing skills for all forms of communication needs and detailed information for senior executives.
- Strong relationship builder with solid budgeting and managerial experience.
- Knowledge of the electric and gas industry a plus.
Skills/Abilities :

- Demonstrated ability to function as spokesperson as needed, both taped and live media interviews in positive and negative situations.
- Ability to make reasonably quick, well-informed strategic decisions.
- Excellent leadership and collaboration skills in effectively managing staff.
