Job Summary:

The Group 1001 Life & Annuity business unit is seeking an experienced Distribution Attorney to join our Law & Compliance Department, supporting distribution of our annuities businesses with a focus on supporting direct-to-consumer and business-to-business digital distribution through our Gainbridge digital insurance agency. While there is a preference to locate this role in our headquarters office in Zionsville, Indiana, we will also consider candidates from other locations. Group 1001 also has offices in Chicago, Illinois and outside of Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Distribution Attorney will lead the legal efforts required to support the structuring, negotiation, and legal documentation for the distribution of fixed, fixed indexed, and variable annuities, as well as other life insurance products and services, issued by the Group 1001 Life & Annuity insurance companies. The role will primarily support the development of digital business-to-business distribution through Gainbridge. Working collaboratively with various business and functional areas, this position will be responsible for supporting due diligence of prospective counterparties and developing commercial distribution agreements and related documentation, as well as monitoring new legal and regulatory developments affecting the distribution of annuities products.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Providing general legal support to the distribution of fixed, fixed indexed, and variable annuities and other life insurance products issued by Group 1001’s Life & Annuity insurance companies
  • Drafting and negotiating complex commercial distribution agreements and related documentation
  • Researching and preparing written analysis of law applicable to the distribution of annuities and life insurance products
  • Working closely with internal and external resources in a team environment on all aspects of product distribution, from counterparty identification and due diligence to product launch
  • Providing solutions to create and maintain competitive business advantages while also properly identifying and, when appropriate, mitigating commercial, regulatory and compliance risks
  • Working on or leading projects involving cross-functional teams
  • Managing outside counsel and consultants as necessary
  • Keeping apprised of legal developments affecting the distribution of annuities and life insurance products

Qualifications:

  • Law degree required
  • Admission to the bar of at least one state and eligibility for admission to the Indiana/Illinois/Massachusetts bar, as applicable, if not already admitted
  • Experience with the distribution of annuities and life insurance, or other financial products and services preferred
  • 8+ years of relevant legal experience with a law firm, regulator, or in-house legal department
  • Knowledge of insurance regulations affecting the distribution of annuity contracts and life insurance policies preferred
  • Knowledge of federal securities regulations affecting the distribution of variable annuities and life insurance preferred
  • Familiarity with standard contract terms and provisions for commercial distribution of financial products and services
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communications skills
  • Highly proficient at drafting clear, concise, and accessible contract language and legal advice
  • Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Strong project and time-management skills; ability to work diligently in an environment of short deadlines and multiple competing priorities with accuracy and efficiency
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity
  • Practical and possessing sound judgment, self-confidence, and the willingness to find practical solutions to business and legal questions
  • Execution-oriented with strict attention to detail
  • Experience working within an organization distributed across geographic locations
