About the Department
The Office of Marketing and Communications consists of brand management, communications, and creative teams that develop integrated marketing strategies across an array of media – including print, web, email, direct marketing channels, advertising, social media, and public relations- to reach the school’s key stakeholders.
Purpose:
As a member of the content team in the Office of Marketing and Communications, the public relations specialist plays a key role in promoting the Michigan Ross reputation and brand to a global audience. The specialist be keenly aware of current news and important topics and be able to promote programs and experts on important and topics and issues in the world. The individual will be an experienced writer, who knows how to identify newsworthy topics and produce engaging stories. It is a collaborative role that involves partnering with individuals across the school in efforts to market Ross’ academic programs and priority school initiatives. The role will report directly to the director of communications.
Responsibilities*
Media Outreach
- Maintain relationships with international, national, and regional media contacts to build trust and awareness about Ross’ academic programs and faculty experts to increase media coverage
- Manage all media relations efforts including developing media outreach plans, and responding to all media inquiries on behalf of Ross
- Develop press releases highlighting announcements about Ross programs
- Develop talking points and prepare Ross spokespeople for media interviews
- Support media relations researching news articles and trending topics
- Arrange and oversee visits by the news media to the Michigan Ross campus
- Collaborate with U-M central PR staff in efforts to promote faculty experts in the news media
Strategic Planning and Partnerships
- Collaborate with the communications director in developing an annual media relations plan that aligns with marketing and communications plan to promote Ross’ academic programs, priority school initiatives
- Engage with academic program leaders and marketing communications partners to identify news and topics to interest prospective students and other external stakeholders
- Collaborate with the Advancement team in promoting donor impact stories and major gift announcements
Required Qualifications*
- A bachelor’s degree and at least eight years of experience in journalism or public relations
- Experience placing stories in the news media
- Experience communicating with members of the news media
- Excellent news writing skills and news judgment; the ability to find stories that resonate with niche and broad audiences
- Set and meet goals, working both independently and as part of a team
- Experience developing strategic communications plans including timelines, targeted audiences, and media outlets with tracking placement and engagement result
- Experience preparing and training experts for media interviews
Salary Information: The general salary range for this position is $71,000 – $79,000. Candidates can expect to be paid a competitive and equitable salary. Factors used to determine salary include experience, knowledge, and skills for the position. All candidates are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
