Domestic Violence Advocate Counselor – Bilingual HFJC

POSITION SUMMARY: Advocate Counselor for the Hope Family Justice Center (HFJC) will create an environment that supports individual safety and breaks the cycle of domestic violence by providing services that include crisis intervention/short term counseling/safety planning, and domestic violence education.

Accountable and responsible for the following results :

  • Provide trauma informed emotional support to help victims understand feelings and behaviors in response to abuse and specific ways to build self-esteem and coping strategies including intake and on-going services.
  • Conducts assessments including risk for lethality utilizing safety planning for victims of domestic violence and their families.
  • Facilitate community presentations on programs, model of care and methods for referral.
  • Assist and accompany client to court for temporary restraining order and RO hearing when deemed necessary.
  • Advocate and coordinate services with internal and external partners based on clients needs and follows up to ensure services have been delivered.
  • Assist clients and families with developing Care Plans based on their respective needs.
  • Provide clients with information on Victim Compensation and assist when needed with application process.
  • Ensure data, physical and electronic files, and reports are kept up to date.
  • Facilitate support groups as needed.
  • Attends training sessions, workshops, seminars as requested by supervisor, or as needed for professional development, or as required for accreditation or licensing.
  • Required to use own vehicle on company business or to transport clients.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • May perform other assignments and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree required;
  • Two years Advocacy and/or direct service experience working with survivors of domestic violence in a community-based setting preferred;
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) reading, writing and speaking required;
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the certified domestic violence counselor per CGS 52-146k before providing direct service to clients;
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of clients;
  • Knowledge of community resources;
  • Crisis intervention and counseling skills;
  • Must have working knowledge of computer applications, and if applicable ability to navigate through case management systems;
  • Must have and maintain a valid CT drivers license. Also, must maintain an acceptable driving record and be insurable at a reasonable rate under the Organizations auto insurance plan.
