Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will create designs for plant systems, components, and structures based on design engineer input, design specifications and industry requirements; create drawings and other design documents based on information provided by design engineers, designers, or management; utilize CAD, word processing, and other electronic document tools to create drawings and design documents; utilize various electronic document and information management systems to process design documents, gather data, and perform research; independently check the drafting and designs of others for accuracy, conformance to design specifications, conformance to industry requirements, and conformance to the Wolf Creek Drafting Standards; gather data and research problems related to drafting, work processing and design document management.
- Ensure the accuracy and legibility of the design documentation required for the safe and efficient operation of the Wolf Creek Generating Station.
- Develop standards or drawings for fabrication and modification of facilities.
- Design simple mechanical, civil, structural, architectural, or electrical systems, components, or structures. (Designer I)
- Design modification packages that include multiple systems or disciplines.
- Perform calculations which may include verifying curves and angles, or solution of triangles and other geometric figures, using established mathematical approaches employing basic algebra, geometric and trigonometric formulas.
- Check drawings and calculations prepared by others to ensure accuracy.
- Review design documents, drawings and/or calculations for conformity with job specifications, accuracy and applicable codes or standards.
- Provide technical design assistance to the engineering staff in support of the operating plant.
- Verify that equipment and “as-built” installations meet design specifications and requirements.
- Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, flow diagrams and trade standards.
- Gather data for analytical, economic, and/or technical engineering/planning studies.
- Determine appropriate materials for specific applications.
- Prepare documents for competitive bids and recommend selection of vendors.
- Maintain a working knowledge of information regarding potential chemical hazards of the various media the drafters or design technician utilize in preparing design documents. Follow established safety procedures when operating equipment or performing design tasks within the power block of the operational plant, including awareness of the potential of radiation exposure.
- Evaluate proposed or alternate design to identify weaknesses or errors, and determine the most efficient, effective alternatives. (Designer II)
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervision/management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Job requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- The Drafter II position requires:
o One year progression from a Drafter I;
o An Associate Degree in Drafting or equivalent technical Drafting degree and one year of relevant work experience; or
o Five years of relevant work experience
- The Drafter III position requires:
o One year progression from a Drafter II position; or
o An Associate Degree in Drafting or equivalent technical Drafting degree and two years of relevant work experience; or
o six years of relevant work experience.
- The Designer I position requires:
o An Associate degree in Engineering plus two years engineering design experience; or
o a minimum of six years of equivalent technical experience in engineering design.
- The Designer II position requires:
o An Associate degree in Engineering plus four years engineering design experience; or
o a minimum of eight years of equivalent technical experience in engineering design.
Cognitive Skills:
- This position requires the ability to: read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community; write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format; effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- This position requires the ability to: work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- This position requires the ability to: solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Vision:
This position requires the ability to pass vision requirements associated with company physicals.
Noise:
This position requires the ability to work in moderately noisy environments.
Additional Information:
• This position requires the ability to operate computer-aided design systems or execute conventional manual drafting and checking methods to ensure availability of accurate design drawings, sketches and modification documents.
