About Duty Officer:Maintains all records required for the daily administration of the Linn County Correctional Center. The incumbent must work independently and use own judgment according to established guidelines and procedures. Required to work with law enforcement, court personnel outside the department and County, and judges as assigned to specific cases; and requires heavy public contact behind window and by telephone. Work is performed under general direction of the Sergeants and Lieutenant of the Linn County Correctional Center. Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis.
Essential Functions
- Assumes responsibility for all bookkeeping procedures which include posting bonds, monthly billing for inmate housing, and bank deposits.
- Receives written and oral orders from the courts continually with a wide variety of instructions.
- Verifies court orders or clarifies in the event of an error.
- Determines when an inmate is to be released according to court order or verbal order of judges, or if an inmate is to be transferred to another county or state.
- Checks records and possibilities of outstanding warrants on inmates before release.
- Sets court appearances for arraignments being bonded out.
- Screens and documents all traffic in Correctional Center, and escorts visitors to their destination.
- Reports to Work Release Director any discrepancies in work release behavior, as reported by inmate’s family or employer.
- Checks in personal property of work release inmates.
- Accepts cash and surety bonds from inmates.
- Utilizes the police “10” codes, and uses the various communications equipment.
- May assist Deputy Sheriffs with other related jail duties.
- Preforms all other related duties as assigned.
- Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer “and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience as member of a support staff required to meet the public and work independently within specific policies and procedures.
- Some experience working with accounting procedures such as deposits, billings, and postings preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of the functions, procedures, and policies of departmental operations.
- Knowledge of Iowa codes.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of bookkeeping and their application to accounting transactions.
- Ability to make decisions in accordance with laws and established regulations. Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Ability to work with the public in adverse situations and deal effectively with prisoners under stressful and/or difficult situations.
- Skills in the operation of standard and specialized equipment, computers, typewriter, calculator, control room panels and walkie-talkies.
Special Necessary Requirements:
Subject to criminal history review. Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment. Regular work attendance required. Must remain awake and aware of surroundings at all times. Voluntary overtime may be offered; working involuntary overtime is mandatory.

Sunday – Monday: 12 a.m. – 8 a.m.
Tuesday – Thursday: 2 Floater Shifts
Friday: 4 p.m. – 12 p.m.
