Job Summary
The Economic Development Coordinator assists in the developing, implementing, and administrating economic development programs for the City of Chaska. The position will work across departments and the community as a primary contact for businesses.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact for business inquiries.
- Develop and implement strategies for businesses to successfully locate or expand in the city by providing necessary guidance and information, including demographics, workforce data, sites, financing options, and other pertinent information.
- Assists in negotiating and implementing development agreements and redevelopment projects, including tax increment financing, tax abatement, and other programs. Coordinate with Community Development and Engineering on such projects.
- Administer and market local economic development programs, such as the Storefront Improvement Program and other loan and grant programs.
- Build relationships with the Chamber of Commerce and businesses through visits, outreach, and communication.
- Identify funding opportunities for community and economic development; prepare and submit applications to secure funding. Manage funding activities and submit requirement reporting and reimbursement requests.
- Assist in implementing strategies to successfully market the city to prospective businesses, visitors, and residents.
- Serve as the city staff liaison to the Chaska Downtown Business Association.
- Assist in the preparing of resource materials, data, reports, and case information to inform City Council and other departments of economic development and workforce best practices and trends.
- Attend and make presentations to community and business groups, City Council, and others as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Finance, Public Administration, Geography, or Urban Planning and three years of economic development experience.
- Master’s degree in business administration, Finance, Public Administration, Geography, or Urban Planning and one-year of economic development experience.
Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of public financing tools, including tax increment financing, tax abatement, and other state and local funding programs.
- Knowledge of economic development tools, techniques, and programs.
- Knowledge of business location and expansion considerations and ability to address those concerns utilizing sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
- Ability to prepare funding applications to public and private sources.
- Ability to analyze needs and solve problems creatively.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with attention to detail.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, developers, consultants, businesses, city staff, City Council and, others.
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people, communicating mutual goals and policies into coordinated action. Must present a positive image of the City to prospective business clients and the community.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule as needed, including some meetings outside of regular work hours.
