Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
This position directs the editorial activities of the Museum of New Mexico Press, a regional book publisher.
How does it get done?
The position plans and implements all editorial work on books. Duties include editorial project management and development; copyediting; monitoring editorial assignments to editorial contractors; preparing artwork and edited material for production; and acquisitions.
Who are the customers?
Readers of books in New Mexico, the Southwest and world; bookstores; museum shops; specialty retailers; colleges and schools; public and private libraries; museums; and national parks and monuments.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has experience editing and project managing scholarly, trade, and illustrated books; demonstrated employment working for a reputable book publisher; and proficiency using Chicago Manual of Style.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree and seven (7) years of experience developing and editing books for general (trade) publications. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
