Summary
The editorial student assistant works closely with University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Communications team to help tell the story of the university and our students, faculty and staff through various channels. This individual will have a range of responsibilities that will be determined based on skill set and interest, and will include some combination of writing, photography, video and social media. The person in this role will also assist with administrative functions, such as scheduling photo shoots, organizing the photo library, etc.
Responsibilities*
Responsibilities will be tailored to the individual’s skills and interests, and may include:
- Researching, interviewing and writing news and campus life stories for UM-Dearborn Reporter (twice-weekly faculty/staff newsletter)
- Taking photographs for Reporter, social media and other needs
- Shooting/editing short video for Reporter and social media, with a focus on telling interesting student stories
- Working with our Digital Media Manager to produce photos, video, graphics and written content for UM-Dearborn’s social media channels: FB, Twitter, IG, LinkedIn
Required Qualifications*
- Enrolled as a University of Michigan-Dearborn student
- Journalism/writing, photography or video experience (for student publications, via classes, etc.), with clips or a portfolio to share
- Knowledge of Canva and/or video editing software a plus
- Reliability. You’ll be where you commit to being when you commit to being there and deliver your work on time
- Good communicator. You’ll keep your supervisor and colleagues posted on the status of projects, speak up early and often about any hurdles, etc.
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Eagerness to collaborate with a team of communications professionals and to develop your professional knowledge and portfolio
- Creative and confident in putting forth your ideas
- An overall passion for UM-Dearborn and a tie to the pulse of student life on campus
Communication, English, Journalism or Marketing majors are likely to especially be a fit for this role, but students in other majors with relevant experience are encouraged to apply
