Description
Educators at the Virginia Zoo facilitate all education programs, including on and offsite school programs, camp programs, guest engagement programs.
This is a year-round, non-exempt, part-time position that is scheduled for 24-32 hours/week.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct all Virginia Zoo education program including, but not limited to, on and off-site school programs, camp programs, scout/group programs, and special events.
- Conduct informal programming and guest experiences regularly through various guest engagement programs including, but not limited to, Zoo Tales, Wild Tykes, educator chats, animal ambassador pop-ups, and interpretation at exhibits and veterinary procedures.
- Contribute to the preparation, setup, and execution of education programs.
- Contribute to the development of education and guest engagement programs.
- Handle Animal Ambassador Collection animals utilized in educational programs.
- Assist Animal Ambassador Keepers with animal husbandry tasks associated with education programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:

- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Background knowledge in life sciences, environmental science, education, or a similar field
- Experience working with children of all ages
- Experience in customer service or interpretation
- At least two years related experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to work outside year-round in varying weather conditions
- Must be able to produce a negative TB test within 30 days of hire and be up to date on relevant vaccines, including Tdap and COVID-19.
- Must be able to work weekends and some evenings.
