The City of Hillsboro Water Department has a great opportunity for a Journeyman Electrician to join our team. The Hillsboro Water Department operates at a metropolitan scale from a suburban environment, with responsibilities for local water distribution and regional water supply. This is an excellent opportunity to support the City and will play a key role in providing the vital resource of clean drinking water to our diverse and thriving community.The Electrician will work on a variety of equipment from Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) control panels to large motors, VFDs, and MCCs and everything in-between related to water distribution, conveyance, treatment, and storage. Working conditions vary, from confined spaces to very remote outdoor locations, and include all weather conditions. Some on-call and response responsibilities are required.

- Distribution and conveyance systems maintenance and improvements
- Flow control and Storage operation and management
- Willamette Water Supply Integration, including involvement in treatment plant start up

- Upgrades to Hillsboro’s Slow Sand Treatment Plant
Examples of Essential Work
In this position, you will be working as a journeyman Electrician primarily maintaining the City of Hillsboro Water distribution, conveyance systems, multiple reservoirs, and pumping facilities. In addition, you will be assisting other partner electricians and maintenance staff at the Joint Water Commission and Slow Sand Filter plants.
Primary duties:
- Maintains, installs, trouble shoots, tests, and inspects water facility installations, including emergency backup power systems, electronic instruments, and servicing feeders and controls in various locations.
- Performs troubleshooting and repairs for voltages 24VDC up to 480 VAC.
- Reads and understands prints and schematics.
- Designs and assesses electrical solutions in compliance with legal requirements.
- Collaborates with other team members, trades, and departments to successfully complete task and projects.
- When assigned, provides 24/7 backup coverage for city water.
- Prepares and/or track various reports, documents, invoices, estimates, and work orders.
- Manages and conducts a high-level safety program, including an electrical arc flash safety program.
- Manages and conducts a mobile equipment safety program.
- Participates in safety programs, including attending meetings and compliance with policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Acceptable Experience and Training
Associate’s degree in Electrical Technology or a related field; and four to five years of experience as a journeyman Electrician with some supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Licensing/Certifications
- Journeyman Electrician License
- A valid driver’s license and safe driving record
