Job Summary

This position will work from a home office location. The person in this position will be required to travel primarily throughout the state inspecting elevator related equipment as assigned by their supervisor.

Inspect existing, new and altered/modified elevators, escalators, and related equipment throughout Minnesota. Administer and interpret a wide variety of codes, rules and standards including elevator, electrical, building and fire. Meet with architects, engineers, building owners and managers, contractors and other governmental officials to discuss design and installation issues.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must hold and maintain a Minnesota master or journeyman elevator constructor license.
  • Must have proof of successful completion of the National Elevator Industry Education Program examination, an equivalent program or have equivalent experience.
  • Must be certified by an accredited organization as a qualified elevator inspector (QEI) within 18 months of hire date.

PLUS:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively with individuals who do not share the same culture, ethnicity, language, or other common experiences.
  • It is the policy of Labor and Industry (DLI) that all employees submit to a driver’s license check prior to employment when driving a vehicle is a requirement of the position. Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license is required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as an elevator inspector, adjuster or mechanic with experience performing installations, maintenance or repair on elevators and escalators.
  • Valid QEI certification.
  • Fluency (spoken and reading comprehension) in one of the following languages: Spanish, Hmong or Somali.
  • General knowledge of all phases of building construction and the requirements of applicable building codes and related statutes and rules.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to ascend and descendladders, maneuver within and on the equipment in the elevator hoistway, machine spaces and the refuge spaces as defined in the ASME A17.1.
