The Linux Embedded Platform Team is seeking a Chief Software Architect who will be a key leader in establishing Linux as a safety-critical RTOS for aerospace. We are looking for an experienced leader who can advocate vision and mission across Boeing and the aerospace industry as well as someone with expertise in Linux platform building and architecting common solutions across multiple use cases.
In this role, you will develop, deploy, and maintain Linux Operating Systems for safety-critical and non-safety critical applications. The Chief Software Architect will be a critical leader in multi-disciplinary teams with systems engineers, testers, business leaders, and customers to design and build and assure new OS features. This is a highly visible, multi-year strategic effort that impacts all areas of the enterprise.
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead efforts to architect and deliver a common embedded Linux solution for use across Boeing’s entire product portfolio
- Collaborate with Chief Engineer and Chief Technologist to solve complex problems with informed technological solutions
- Leverage knowledge and experience to make technological decisions that drive innovation and agility while minimizing risks and costs
- Lead change management efforts for implementation of architectural changes through the product.
- Responsible for ensuring all architecture artifacts are generated on-time and maintained
- Act as a subject matter expert and mentor to technical teams and leaders
- Develop high-level, solution-focused vision and lead efforts in communicating and breaking down vision for development teams.
- High visibility communication of mission and vision to Boeing leadership and aerospace industry.
- Partner with the different organizational leadership teams to understand the business needs that drive technology decisions
- Works under minimal direction.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or other technical degree
- 10+ years experience in software development
- 5+ Years professional development experience in the C programming language
- 3+ Experience developing software architecture for embedded environments
- 3+ years of experience in developing Linux and/or Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) software
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience architecting a complete Linux distribution, including bootloader, system libraries, real-time, etc.
- Experience contributing to Open Source Software (OSS)
- Experience in any combination of the following additional languages: C++, Python, Rust
- Experience with git, gcc, clang, bazel
- Experience with DO-178C software development
- Experience with bootloaders, hypervisors
- Experience in multiple processor families (e.g. x86, ARM)
- Experience debugging complex kernel issues
- Experience in aerospace and defense industry
- Experience with estimating and costing new business
- Experience with projects related to device driver, or Linux kernel internals programming
- Experience with standard API such as POSIX, FACE, ARINC 653, OMS
Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years’ related work experience, Master+12 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard

Summary pay range: $141,100 – $218,500
