What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated and hardworking Energy Controls Technologist (Job Title: General Maintenance Technologist) to join our Facilities Maintenance Department. The applicant will be responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and improving building systems to achieve maximum efficiency and reliable operations at Sandia in California. Utilizing building automation (Direct Digital Control), performance monitoring (Fault Detection and Diagnostic), and energy metering systems, to identify concerns related to appropriate operation of Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC) and implement necessary corrections.

This position works collaboratively with facilities technologists, engineers, and management to verify proper installation, operation, and calibration of control system devices throughout the site.

On any given day, you will be called on to:

  • Regularly inspect and continuously monitor systems and equipment while troubleshooting irregular or malfunctioning conditions
  • Perform quality control functions related to the operation of building automation system programs, database, graphics, alarms, startup, and commissioning of related systems
  • Support projects for primarily HVAC control system installation and upgrades, enhancements to existing control systems, commissioning, and oversees activities of vendors and contractors working on building automation systems
  • Consult and collaborate with Facility Managers, System Engineers, Building Managers, Operations Engineers, Work Planners, and End Users on technical issues to ensure proper repairs and installations are planned efficiently and implemented effectively

Salary Range

$63,900 – $122,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • High School Diploma plus 3 or more years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
  • Selected applicants will be required to pass a Job Placement Assessment before beginning the job to ensure that they can perform the essential physical requirements, with or without accommodations

Qualifications We Desire

  • Associate degree in electronics/electro-mechanical systems, computer technology, air conditioning, automation
  • Three or more years of experience in one or more of the following: troubleshooting of building automation systems, system maintenance and upgrades, and/or new installs
  • Certificate of proficiency in Siemens, Johnson Controls, Automated Logic WebCTRL, or other equivalent building automation system
  • Professional certification in automation, energy management or related area(s)
  • Extensive experience in operating, troubleshooting, and installing building automation systems; humidity and temperature control; interfacing VFDs; VAV; laboratory air pressure systems; fume hood controllers; air and hydronic balancing
  • Demonstrated ability to commission and troubleshoot controls systems hardware and/or software, communications networks, controllers, and devices
  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to effectively interact with people at all levels, internal and external to the organization

About Our Team

The Mechanical maintenance team is responsible for performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on mechanical systems at the CA site. This includes plumbing, fire sprinkler, building controls, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
