Are you ready to further develop your design knowledge and broaden your project management skills? Snohomish County Public Works is hiring an experienced, talented individual to fill a key Engineer II position in our Engineering Services Design team. This is a hybrid job combining remote work with office work.

The Engineering Services Design team designs road and bridge projects improving the safety, efficiency, and capacity of Snohomish County infrastructure, while also providing a variety of engineering support services to other Departments/Divisions within Snohomish County.

The Engineer II is an intermediate level engineering position where the successful candidate will act as a supporting engineer on most projects working on discipline reports and perform engineering calculations and estimating.

Well qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate experience analyzing and designing transportation projects; preparing engineering studies, plans, specifications, and estimates for a variety of public works projects; and the use of spreadsheets, databases, GIS software, and AutoCAD. The successful candidates will have excellent communication and organizational skills, will demonstrate the ability to work well with staff and stakeholders with a variety of backgrounds, and will be able to positively contribute to the Engineering Services Design team as well as the other divisions in Public Works.

Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is required for this position.

Job Duties

BASIC FUNCTION
Perform a variety of advanced engineering assignments in the design of Public Works projects. Tasks include design of roadways, bridges, drainage systems, including preparation of plans, design reports and drainage reports.

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  1. Design of road and bridge improvements or other public works construction projects, including preparing or overseeing the preparation of plans, specifications, and quantity and cost estimates.
  2. Conducts or directs the preparation of studies and preliminary field surveys in preparation for design and construction of public works facilities such as roadways, bridges, solid waste sites, or drainage improvements.
  3. Prepares project prospectus for applications for federal and state funding of public works projects, including the recommendations for improvements, estimates of required quantities, project cost estimates, and other relevant data.
  4. Responsible for preparation of right-of-way plans in order to acquire land for public works facilities; determines project requirements for right of way acquisition.
  5. Attends public meetings and formal public hearings on proposed county construction projects; prepares or supervises the preparation of maps, exhibits, drawings, charts and graphs and provides technical testimony as required.
  6. Prepares and reviews technical reports related to engineering assignments, including the areas of hydrology, hydraulics, traffic capacity, signal design, roadway geometrics, and roadway structure design.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering or related field and two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skill and ability to perform the work. A working knowledge of office-related and technical engineering computer software is preferred. Must pass job related tests.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
A valid Washington State Drivers License is required for employment.
An Engineer-in-Training certificate is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT

Physical requirements of the position include the ability to walk over rough terrain to inspect public works projects. Manual dexterity is required to operate the equipment utilized by the position and to generate reports.

SUPERVISION
Employees report to and receive direction from an engineering supervisor or designated lead engineer. The work requires considerable independent judgment and discretion in developing and achieving work unit goals and objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is performed in an office environment with occasional field trips to locations throughout the county to make site visits, attend meetings, or coordinate work activities. Meetings or project requirements may involve working evenings, weekends or holidays as necessary.
