Engineer IV – Electrical Studies

Candidate Specification

Requirements: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a directly related field plus three (3) years of experience as an Engineer or other occupation/position/job title involving experience in the field of power systems. Experience may be gained concurrently and must include:

Two (2) years in each of the following:

  • Applying knowledge of electric power system network analysis, transmission planning and assessment techniques in the practice of transient stability analysis using Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E), Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF), Power Systems Computer Aided Design (PSCAD), Electromagnetic Transients Program – Recovery Voltage (EMTP-RV), or similar tools
  • Applying NERC and Transmission Planner or Planning Coordinator planning reliability standards and criteria
  • Performing ampacity studies with CYMCAP
  • Applying knowledge of short circuit analysis (Aspen One-Liner)
  • Performing generator interconnection studies
  • Electromechanical domain software like PSS/E or PSLF
  • Renewable generation plant design
  • Performing ampacity studies on cables (34.5 kV or higher)
  • Performing stability analysis for renewable energy resources in electromechanical domain including PSS/E or PSLF
  • Performing steady state analysis including Injection Studies or Load Flow Studies (N-0, N-1, and N-1-1 analysis) in TARA, PSS/E, or PSLF

One (1) year in the following:

  • Performing renewable energy resource control performance benchmarking studies between electromechanical domain (PSS/E or PSLF) and electromagnetic domain (PSCAD or EMTP-RV).

Certificate/License Required: Professional Engineer (PE)

Job Description

Duties: Provide advanced and independent management and oversight of power system modeling and analysis. Provide leadership in the development of proposed modeling best-practices suitable for steady state and dynamic performance of generation and transmission/distribution facilities. Perform technical assessments and provide technical and administrative guidance and tutelage to less experienced engineers. Oversee and manage dynamic system modeling information and studies. Develop and recommend best practices for the conduct of system impact analysis (including electromagnetic transient analysis) of new renewable technologies, such as inverter-based generation, including wind, solar, and storage technologies. Develop and recommend best practices for studies involving FACTS, HVDC and Power Electronic-based devices. Develop and execute NERC compliance studies including but not limited to MOD 25-27, 32-33, and TPL 001-004. Develop and execute planning studies to integrate renewable projects/targets in electromechanical domain. Develop and verify offshore renewable project designs in electromechanical and electromagnetic domain. Represent company in industry forums involving power system modeling issues and approaches. Develop and execute Transient Studies onshore and offshore renewable projects in electromagnetic domain. Present recommendations regarding system modeling issues and results to ISOs and utilities. Conduct load flow and stability studies in EMT tools as well as Electro Mechanical tools. Evaluate technical reports and provide independent review for clients.
