Description
Under limited supervision, effectively and efficiently directs the operations of the Nassau County Animal Care & Control volunteer program, offsite adoption and community events, and social media outlets. Recruits, trains, evaluates and recognizes volunteers. Acts as a member of the leadership team to set goals, monitor volunteer and outreach operations and maintain partnerships within the community to forward the goals and objectives of the County; creates a robust and active website and social media presence to promote adoptions and market and advertise programmatic initiatives.
Examples of Duties
- Develops, implements, and manages volunteer and outreach programs for the Animal Care & Control Department.
- Coordinates and directs the development of the volunteer program.
- Manages recruitment, training, recognition and professionalism of volunteers. Ensures volunteers carry out their responsibilities in a smooth, efficient, and accurate manner.
- Creates and disperses regular volunteer communications.
- Tracks volunteer’s hours and performance, reports to and collaborates with assigned supervisor to resolve issues.
- Develops and maintains a volunteer needs assessment in conjunction with all departmental divisions.
- Develops and maintains a volunteer manual for internal use that provides information and guidelines for staff.
- Maintains communication with supervisor and other staff as required.
- Creates and maintains an off-site adoption schedule to maximize public access to adoptable animals, increase adoption success rates and facilitate positive placements for animals.
- Coordinates public education events and community outreach presentations with schools, churches, civic groups, neighborhoods, and various other community organizations.
- Ensures proper implementation of organizational programs, policies and procedures.
- Ensures a regular social media presence; creates, implements and maintains an engaging and effective social media plan.
- Coordinates, updates and maintains current and relevant information on website, Facebook, and other social media outlets to forward adoption, foster and rescue efforts and effectively market program activities, events, and initiatives.
- Uses social media to enhance fundraising and donations.
- Answers the telephone; provides information as requested and/or forwards calls to appropriate staff person; takes messages as needed.
- Greets and assists office visitors.
- Manages the preparation and tracking of files for all projects, events, grants and/or related projects.
- Assists supervisor in the preparation of the annual budget to include providing requests and justifications for budget requests. Manages and monitors expenditures to ensure adherence to approved budget.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, volunteers, co-workers, County personnel, Board of Commissioners, news media, consultants, various other Government agencies, vendors and the general public.
- Operates a variety of equipment, which may include a computer, typewriter, fax machine, copier, recording equipment, telephone, calculator, etc.
- Operates a vehicle.
- Coordinates special projects and events as assigned.
- Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave requests.

Typical Qualifications
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by three (3) or more years of responsible volunteer coordination experience to include the use of social media, digital and traditional communications as a fundraising tool or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
