PG&E’s Applied Technologies Services (ATS) Materials Engineering & Failure Analysis group provides a range of services, which include failure analysis, condition assessments, and material specification testing.

Facility description: ATS has a mechanical testing and metallurgy laboratories that specialize in failure analysis testing. The laboratories are equipped with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscopes, image analysis system, sample prep equipment, micro-hardness testers, a variety of strength testing frames, and a basic machine shop for fabricating testing fixtures.

Position Summary

This position is represented by Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) subject to collective bargaining.

In this Engineering Technician I position, you will be involved in safely operating lab equipment and tools including performing maintenance as necessary; manage test sample inventories including coordinating delivery, processing, and labeling new samples, performing preliminary inspections, communicating sample status with engineers and stakeholders, tracking on-site materials, and dispositioning of samples.

Materials you will encounter on the job will include steels (pipes, valves, vessels), aluminum (wire, fittings, connectors), copper (wire, valves), and ceramics (insulators).

The ideal candidate will have some basic skills in, but not limited to:

  • experience executing tests based upon industry and company testing standards under engineering direction
  • understanding in testing the properties of materials under dynamic or static forces in conducting mechanical tests such as tensile strength tests, compression strength tests, bending tests, shear tests, impact resistance, fracture toughness, and fatigue per industry standards
  • knowledge and experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, product specifications and other technical documents
  • fabrication skills including hand tools, band saw, drill press, using acetylene torches, cut off saws (wet, dry), etc.

Travel requirement: 15-30% of the time, throughout the PG&E territory.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity.

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the hourly rate range for this position is $36.81 to $52.75, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.

Responsibilities

  • Safety: Demonstrate safe working practices at all times. Strong focus on customer, general public and employee safety in all work practices.
  • Job Management: Collaborate well with team members to conduct laboratory projects. Detail Oriented in the managing test sample inventory and testing results
  • Materials Testing: Executes and report results with direct support from an engineer or senior team member.
  • Housekeeping: Responsible for performing necessary, maintenance, calibration, and shop orderliness including ensuring adequate inventory of testing supplies is maintained.
  • Quality Improvement: Identify continuous improvement opportunities within the lab
  • Reporting: Compile detailed test data and put together simple pre/post-test summary reports in the format requested by the clients including Microsoft Access databases

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Possess a 2-year AA of Science degree (preferably mechanical, Non-destructive testing or materials science) or equivalent education and/or certifications in the appropriate field of technology
  • Experience with materials management (Sample log-in, tracking, and following internal procedures for chain of custody)

Desired:

  • Experience with operating laboratory equipment testing including maintenance, repairs, calibrations and troubleshooting of a difficult nature on a wide variety of materials
  • Experience in basic metal fabrication (cutting, joining. grinding, polishing, and testing)
  • Experience with reading and interpreting engineering drawings, product specifications and other technical documents
  • Previously performed basic metallurgical test lab activities including sample sectioning, mounting & polishing, hardness testing (Rockwell, Vickers, Knoop), using precision measuring equipment (gages, calipers, scales, micrometers, etc.), macro & micro photography, and SEM microscope operation
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy concepts is a plus
  • Non-destructive testing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, managing multiple tasks to achieve significant goals.
  • Comfortable with computers: familiar with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
