The Work You Will Do:
This Engineering Specialist I position performs professional work under the direction of the Senior Engineering Specialist Supervisor for the Division of Water Resource Management’s Shared Services Program (GIS Section) located in Tallahassee, Florida. This position is integral to handling all the spatial data needs of the division, assisting the program areas in improving workflow and getting accustomed to new GIS technology, as it evolves. This position will also provide the program areas with geographic data, maps, and web applications.
- Overview of primary responsibilities
- Meet the needs of the various programs regarding GIS data.
- Train alongside other GIS team members on projects and share knowledge as the opportunities arise.
- Produce GIS layers and web applications for program area staff.
- Create and maintain maps, rectify imagery, create image mosaics, perform data analysis, digitize and do quality control of surveys, plot maps, publish layers to the spatial database engine (SDE).

Your Specific Responsibilities:
- Evaluates and tracks information for reclamation and mine permitting programs that are carried out statewide.
- Processes and evaluates mine reclamation information conceptual plans and annual reclamation reports as needed for division tracking of program performance.
- Provides management and other staff members with maintenance of geographic information, periodic plans of action and status reports, written or oral, as needed, on assigned areas of responsibility.
- Assists with updating and verification of applicable files, maps and data accuracy.
- Maintains up-to-date files and computer tracking for assign program activities.
- Maintains data and statistics on regulatory activities and disseminates programmatic information to staff, the public, other governmental agencies and the professional community as directed by management.
- Prepare, Publish, and Plot maps as requested.
- Work and lead efforts on Image processing tasks.
- Assist with geodatabases, as needed.
- Maintains technical expertise in the areas of information management, focusing on the management of spatial information as well as related programmatic records and meta-data needed to track and analyze the performance of regulatory program activities and requirements.
- Maintain GIS layers and websites, as needed
- Provide training as needed o, but not limited, to ArcGIS, ArcView, MapDirect, and Mobile Device technology.
- Assists staff and Department management with collection or presentation of regulatory programmatic materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Geomatics and Surveying concepts such as Coordinate Systems, Projections, Datum, Datum Transformation, Legal Descriptions to ensure the accuracy and precision of the data produced and received.
- Knowledge of and skill in GIS-related software including but not limited to ArcGIS ArcMap, ArcPro, and ERDAS.
- Ability to operate PC computers, plotters, scanners, and hand-held devices used in the development of the biological data collection.
- Good understanding of trigonometry, geometry, and algebra concepts such as angles, trigonometric and Pythagoras’s theorem, distance formulas, angles, etc.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team to solve problems.
- Ability to determine work priorities and work effectively and accurately under a deadline.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to interpret scientific or technical data for the public and to prepare short technical reports.
- Ability to work independently.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid driver’s license
