Overview

Appointment Type: Full-Time Regular (FTR)

Location: Oak Ridge, TNN

*Salary Range: $21.80 – $30.33/Hr.

Purpose: Develops, administers, and implements engineering support to maintain research programs at NOAA/ATDD.

Responsibilities

  • Assists others in installing, operating, and maintaining monitoring instruments and testing equipment necessary for meteorological experiments involving air, land, and water interactions. Much of this work will be in the field.
  • Under direction, performs tests or experiments to test potential new instrumentation for utilization by NOAA/ATDD. These tests and experiments will involve using calibration equipment and standards, datalogging equipment, and computers. Data will be processed and presented in spreadsheets and reports.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment failures and data quality issues. This will involve the use of voltmeters, other measurement equipment, and electrical component soldering.
  • Assist with data management, data processing, and data analysis for NOAA/ATDD projects. This will involve using Excel and other Microsoft software.
  • Use programming skills to write datalogger programs or edit and improve existing programs.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related field and 0-6 months experience or Associate’s degree and 2-4 years of job related experience required. An equivalent combination of education and experience performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

  • Performs assigned tasks from detailed instructions and established procedures.
  • Works under close supervision and work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and for following the defined policies and procedures.
  • Limited use and/or application of basic principles, theories, and concepts from the engineering field.
  • Develops solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope.
  • Entry level skills of electrical engineering, or some equivalent engineering discipline.
  • Contributes to completion of routine technical tasks. Failure to achieve results can normally be overcome without serious effect on schedules and programs.
  • Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor, project leaders, and other professionals in ATDD.
  • Must be able to travel up to 30%, carry 50 lbs., and obtain climbing certification.
    • The position will travel to sites across the US including Alaska by driving and flying, sometimes in small aircraft to remote sites. The travel will be for periods of one to three weeks up to 120 days per year. Much of the work will be outside, exposed to heat, cold, sun, and physical labor.

*The candidate’s starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate’s qualifications to determine salary.
