We are currently hiring for two positions: Enterprise Data Engineer and Enterprise Data Scientist. If you think you might fit either role, apply to both!

The Enterprise Data Scientist is part of the City’s Data and Analytics team in the Information Technology Department under the supervision of the Deputy CIO or designee. The principal function of an employee in this class is to work with City data to produce meaningful analysis, visualizations, and communications to stakeholders. This person will have a deep understanding of enterprise business data needs and create statistics and tools which provide business intelligence to both City departments and the public. The data scientist will oversee the City’s data and analytics tools, applications, and dashboards as well as advise on best practices for data analysis and dissemination. This position will also advise on data security and data governance best practices.
Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or related field; and
  • Considerable experience in data science or analysis; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
  • Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Background must clear Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS)

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Learns and understands database structure for the City’s enterprise business applications such as records management systems (RMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise permitting and licensing (EPL), enterprise asset management (EAM), and geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Models complex datasets to meet business needs.
  • Builds predictive model and machine-learning algorithms to answer complex questions.
  • Mines data warehouses and synthesizes data to identify trends and patterns.
  • Audits databases to assess data quality and identify gaps for specific purposes.
  • Enriches existing datasets to identify relationships in disparate datasets.
  • Advises City on technical resources necessary for data analysis needs.
  • Translates business needs into analytics to support decision-making.
  • Presents and reports data in logical, concise manner.
  • Creates visualizations of information and develops presentations on the results of data analysis.
  • Organizes data into usable formats for department customers.
  • Explains technical information and data limitations to non-technical audiences.
  • Works with stakeholders to assist with data related technical issues and supports their data needs.
  • Assists customers with tools and expertise to do their own data analysis and understanding of data limitations.
  • Creates and supports the environment for others in the organization and the public to access data.
  • Makes recommendations on standards for data analysis, visualization, and data software solutions.
  • Applies data expertise on current and potential future sources and uses of data.
  • Creates metadata standards and framework and documentation for all datasets.
  • Advises on ethical interpretation of data, visualization, and analysis techniques.
  • Participates and advises the enterprise data governance planning and documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with security policies.
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
