The Work You Will Do:
The Environmental Manager-SES, position number 37010137, is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Biology Program in Tallahassee and will be responsible for managing nine positions in the Bench Biology laboratory responsible for microbiology and chlorophyll analysis. Responsibilities include hiring and supervising staff, authorizing data, leading projects, and providing technical consulting. This work provides the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available.

The work location of this position is in Tallahassee (Leon County), Florida. The city hosts the Capital of Florida and seat of state government. Your Specific Responsibilities:
In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position. If position is supervisory, incumbent is also expected to actively support and work toward fulfilling the Agency’s Affirmative Action objectives.
Serves as environmental manager of the Bench Workgroup within the Biology Program. Performs managerial work directing the efforts of professional and technical staff analyzing environmental samples for microbiology and chlorophyll analysis.
Directly supervises staff and performs human resource-related activities for the managed positions. Communicates, motivates, trains, and evaluates on direct work performance and is responsible for time and attendance of subordinates. Makes recommendations to maintain sufficient staffing levels for efficient and effective laboratory operations. Performs hiring activities, as needed.
Supports quality assurance (QA) objectives, assists in the preparation of the Laboratory’s Quality Manual, and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Ensures analyses are performed in accordance with the Laboratory’s Quality Manual, SOPs, and Laboratory safety protocols. Evaluates the acceptability of routine analyses and performance tests, takes appropriate action in response to unusual or unexpected results, and documents action taken. Directs all activities within the assigned area of responsibility that are associated with the laboratory’s certification program.
Ensures analytical results are authorized and reported within laboratory deadlines.
Communicates regularly, timely, and accurately with the administrator of the workgroup and staff on issues related to workload, analytical methods, personnel, training, data reporting, and other work-related activities. Coordinates with other Biology Program administrators and managers on research projects, special studies, and workload issues. This position participates in laboratory freezer/refrigerator alarm monitoring.
Assists in designing, implementing, interpreting, and reporting on focused laboratory and field studies in support of department program objectives. Analyzes and interprets biological and chemical data. Provides technical consulting services to agency programs and customers, performs technical reviews and evaluations, and participates on technical committees. Represents the Biology Program in department meetings and meetings with other agencies and stakeholders. Produces technical reports and presentations.
Stays abreast of developing analytical technology and directs the evaluation of new equipment and methodologies. Makes purchasing recommendations for equipment and expenses. Ensures that program funds, equipment and supplies are efficiently and effectively utilized.
Performs other duties as directed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and management.
- Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in physical and natural sciences, biological research, analysis, or testing.
- Knowledge of principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment used in bench biology laboratory testing and analysis.
- Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, document activities, and ensure timely completion of multiple concurrent assignments.
- Ability to use to use QC measures to evaluate accuracy, precision and efficiency of biological methods and ensure high quality data.
- Ability to maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for analytical methods and laboratory procedures, including all necessary documentation to support quality control procedures.
- Ability to use laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for sample processing and reporting.
- Ability to instruct, train, and monitor staff in the proper performance of laboratory procedures.
- Ability to prepare technical reports and presentations.
- Ability to effectively evaluate, report, and present complex scientific information and respond to questions from management, clients, auditors, and internal customers
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to think critically and utilize problem-solving techniques.
- Ability to manage, supervise, and motivate people to meet assigned objectives
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences from an accredited university or college and 4 years of relevant experience; OR Masters in listed areas and 2 years of relevant experience; OR PhD in listed areas and 1 year of relevant experience; OR 8 years of relevant experience. Additionally, must have at least one year of experience as a supervisor, coordinator, project manager, program manager, team lead, team trainer, or have completed relevant managerial/leadership training.
- Travel
- Valid State of Florida Driver’s License or the equivalent from another State.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 16 college credit hours in general microbiology and biology. A copy of degree transcript will be requested, if not attached in the application.
- At least 2 years of experience in the environmental analysis of microbiology and chlorophyll samples
