Examples of Duties
Essential Function Examples
Ensure each stormwater facility is functioning properly as designed and required by MSD.
Site inspection of each stormwater facility and determine work load.
Keep records of each stormwater facility site.
File a yearly annual report on each facility to MSD.
Work with park staff to make sure the facility is in compliance.
Assist the Environmental Resource Specialist as needed to develop, manage, maintain and interpret natural areas in the park system.
Assist with the planting and re-construction of prairies, wetlands, savannas, and woodlands.
Control and or eradicate invasive plant species throughout the park system by means of herbicide use, cutting, pulling, and mowing.
Exercise safe and proper use of pesticides including storage, mixing, handling, applying, disposal, and hauling of chemicals.
Marginal Function Examples
Work as part of an environmental team to manage the natural resources of the Parks Department.
Assist the environmental section with the planning and development of new natural history resources within the Parks Department.
Asist with the proper treatment and control of invasive species.
Coordinate and work with volunteer groups within outlines job activities and tasks.
Assist the environmental section in other specified duties as directed.
Work independently with minimal supervision or direction.
Perform such additional duties as may properly be required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Candidates must possess a valid Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the purpose and functions of storm water facilities and the multiple structural designs of these facilities.
- Knowledge of native plants and their requirements to include trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.
- General landscaping knowledge and practices.
- Familiarity of hand tools used for landscaping and knowledge of small engine equipment & power tools.
- Knowledge to recognize invasive species and plan treatments.
- Knowledge or work experience re-constructing or re-storing wetland, woodlands, savannas, or prairies.
- Experience with tractor brush hog, small hand tools, line trimmers, prescribed burning, etc.
Additional Information
SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant’s education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
