SALARY RANGE: $59,488.00 – $82,763.20

PURPOSE:

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Assessment and Evaluation (A&E) team offers comprehensive lifecycle evaluation for a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and workforce development initiatives across a range of technical and research institutional settings. Successful candidates will contribute to ORISE evaluation initiatives, primarily the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) initiative Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW). This initiative leverages SC’s world-unique national laboratories, user facilities, and other research infrastructure to provide undergraduate and graduate training opportunities for students and academic institutions not currently well represented in the U.S. science and technology ecosystem. This includes Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and individuals from groups historically underrepresented in STEM, but also includes students from communities with environmental justice impacts and the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) jurisdictions.

Responsibilities

  • Develops program-specific survey instruments, establishes protocols, develops and maintains scheduling of activities, obtains required approvals, resolves problems, and conducts data collection for projects. Documents data collection procedures, data files, application programs, and data analysis.
  • Manages assessment and evaluation program-specific milestones and deliverables.
  • Works with program evaluation sponsors and external collaborators under general supervision.
  • Implements and participates in data collection activities, including monitoring return of forms, processing of data, contacting a sample of non-respondents, and conducting interviews, focus groups, or observations to gather additional information.
  • Designs, implements, and uses procedures for data entry, retrieval, quality control, and data management activities including on-line databases.
  • Analyzes survey data including design of procedures to manage and analyze data, produce summary statistics, verify results, and provide data to project staff and other contacts.
  • Prepares survey results and reports by providing summary data tables, descriptive statistics, and relevant comparison data, and drafting and editing report documents.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in statistics, evaluation, business, scientific, technical, education or related field (preference of 2 years’ experience specifically in science education evaluation) and 2-4 years direct experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

  • Currently pursing or have obtained a postdoctoral degree in evaluation, public health, education, political science, anthropology, psychology, and sociology or a related field is required.
  • Evaluation Research Associates will work together as an interdisciplinary cohort and with a team of evaluators who are leading the RENEW investigation. Across the cohort, we are looking for a broad range of skills applicable to evaluation of STEM education and workforce initiatives. We encourage applications from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds with experience, coursework, and expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Expertise in elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education settings, and/or in research or evaluation of those initiatives.
    • Experience working with Minority Serving Institutions.
    • Experience working with faculty, staff, and trainees at institutions of higher education.
    • Survey and data collection tool/instrument development.
    • Survey administration and tracking.
    • Facilitation of qualitative data collection (e.g., interviews, focus groups, observations).
    • Quantitative data analysis.
    • Qualitative data analysis.
    • Data visualization and innovative communication of findings to specialized or general audiences.
    • General experience in evaluation or research of STEM education or workforce development programs.
    • Experience pertaining to research methodologies and techniques appropriate to the evaluation of K-20 science education programs.

*The candidate’s starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate’s qualifications to determine salary.
