This position maybe based out of our Cambridge, MA or East Hanover, NJ office.
You will serve as a trusted partner to team members across NIBR & GDD (R&D) to provide guidance on ethical issues related to R&D activities and ensure that Novartis’ R&D activities adhere to ethical principles and guidelines, while also addressing ethical questions where there is ambiguity from internal or external policies, regulations, or guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide ethical guidance on issues related to R&D activities and address ethical questions and issues arising within internal or external policies, regulations, or guidelines.
• Apply classical R&D ethics principles (e.g., autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice) and rules (e.g., informed consent, confidentiality, and privacy) with other Code of Ethics principles and ensure robust poli-cies, processes, and governance structures are in place to translate and implement these in practice.
• Bring such guidance and participate in discussion at the relevant internal boards (eg PSB, ESG board) or for R&D peer review.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures related to ethics in R&D.
• Conduct training sessions for R&D employees on relevant ethical principles and guidelines.
• Keep up-to-date with current developments in R&D ethical trends and apply new knowledge to R&D associates across Novartis’ R&D.
• Link R&D ethics to forward-looking compliance, risk and/or business ethics programs to enable greater reach and impact by leveraging established networks, governance structures, and engagement resources.
• Participate and contribute in industry forums on R&D ethics while establish-ing strong external networks and relationships with experts in the ethics field, industry peers and regulatory authorities to remain current on industry related trends.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $201,600 and $302,400 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors

What you’ll bring to the role:
Essential Criteria
• PhD/MD or equivalent in Life science, bioethics, philosophy, law, or a related field.
• 10+ years experience in drug development, in the pharmaceutical industry or in a clinical setting.
• Strong understanding of ethical principles and guidelines related to pharmaceutical research and development, clinical trials, and marketing strategies.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ethical issues to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Strong track record of partnering with R&D teams to establish a common vi-sion to enhancing business objectives.
• Excellent presentation skills, including ability to prepare and deliver written and oral communications appropriate for multiple audiences and levels within the organization.
• Demonstrated ability to establish strong external networks accessed and relationships built with experts in the field, industry peers and regulatory authorities to remain current on compliance and other industry related trends.
