GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs moderate to complex technical work collaborating with Center staff to develop and design exhibit content for Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Exhibit work is typically project-oriented, with a focus on South Florida’s coastal and marine ecosystems and natural history. Other tasks will include, but are not limited to, assisting with long term exhibit planning, routine exhibit maintenance and review, as well as assisting with Gumbo Limbo’s marketing and special events, and customer service/visitor engagement.
Work is performed under regular supervision of the Exhibits Coordinator at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Works in cooperation with the Exhibits Coordinator and other Center staff to develop exhibit content following Gumbo Limbo Nature Center style guidelines and interpretive plan;
Produces exhibits, signage, print text and graphics using appropriate computer applications and/or outside sources;
Assists with routine review and maintenance of indoor and outdoor signage, displays and exhibits;
Assists with exhibit installation, removal and relocations, including physical labor and use of hand and power tools;
Participates as a member of the Exhibit Planning Committee, establishing priorities, budget and timeline for the Exhibits program;
RELATED TASKS:
Assists Center staff and Friends of Gumbo Limbo with materials involving graphic display for marketing and special events;
Participates in on- and off-site outreach events;
Answers visitor’s questions regarding exhibits, programs & natural history of GLEC
Coordinate volunteer projects with the Gumbo Limbo Volunteer Coordinator;
Fill in, as needed, as a site interpreter and visitor services representative: providing customer service at welcome desk, offering guided walks, and serving as an aquarium interpreter;
Write articles to include in the Membership newsletter, e-blasts, and other public relations media.
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles of natural resource interpretation, non-personal education and exhibit design standards;
Ability to research information to prepare and present displays and exhibits to the public and students;
Ability to be creative and artistic in the design, implementation and maintenance of a broad scope of educational displays;
Effective time management, ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, reliability, and the ability to think and act proactively;
Must be able to work independently as well as with a team;
Familiarity or general knowledge of South Florida’s environment, ecosystems, plants and animals (both aquatic and terrestrial);
Knowledge regarding natural history collections items, including proper handling, care and record keeping;
Knowledge and ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
Ability to direct and coordinate the work of volunteers.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, officials, program participants of all ages, and the general public.
Ability to follow directions, work as a team member, and work independently.
Proficient with computers including Microsoft Office programs, Outlook, and other database systems.
Strong organizational and record keeping skills; ability to meet deadlines.
Excellent writing and communication skills, including a demonstrated proficiency in and comfort with public speaking and presentations
Proficiency with the Adobe Creative suite, photographic equipment,
Ability to operate video and audio equipment and to create and conduct lectures/presentations.
Ability to perform while working in an unstructured environment with numerous interruptions throughout the day.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor’s degree in/with major coursework in exhibit design, computer science, graphic arts, natural sciences or related fields;
Or two (2) years’ experience with graphic design and creating interpretive exhibits for nature centers, museums, zoos, or similar organizations;
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to push articles weighing up to 300 lbs. Must be able to kneel, walk, and stand for long periods of time, including in sand and wading in water. Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures, heights up to 40 ft., noise, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, toxic metals, pollen, animals, insects, electrical hazards, poisonous plants, an dark or confined spaces. May be required to wear other PPE such as a hard hat/helmet, safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes/boots, hearing protectors, face shield, safety harness, safety vest, and gloves.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license with no more than six (6) points within a three (3) year period. Must be able to work weekends and holidays -this position’s regular schedule will be Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday but is flexible to the needs of the Center. Must be CPR and First Aid Certified.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year
PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee’s supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.
MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
