POSITION SUMMARY
The External Affairs Officer will support Trinity Church Wall Street’s capacity to drive change in alignment with its priorities and across departments. As part of the Rector’s Office reporting to the Managing Director, External Affairs & Special Projects the Officer will work closely with internal colleagues, outside organizations, and consultants to deploy government engagement, targeted communications, and collaboration that advance Trinity’s goals.
The annual salary range for this position is $90,600 to $97,700.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify and analyze relevant legislation and monitor policy changes at the local and state levels.
- Initiate and maintain relationships with external organizations under the guidance of the Managing Director, External Affairs & Special Projects.
- Identify emerging opportunities and targets for advocacy, support decision-making on which issues to engage on, strategies to be used and project management as needed, and track progress.
- Draft internal and external communications including briefings, memos, presentations, updates, and social media posts.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues related to Trinity Church Wall Street, and the Episcopal and Anglican Church.
- Engage faith partners to advance change in alignment with Trinity’s advocacy priorities.
- Participate in meetings with nonprofit and faith partners and government officials.
- Work closely with the Communications team and other departments to inform and mobilize the congregation, faith communities and Trinity stakeholders to advance policy and advocacy work.
- Assist with the development and implementation of processes and tools that support Trinity’s advocacy priorities and government relations strategy.
- Support efforts to engage youth in Trinity’s advocacy efforts.
- Adhere to confidentiality rules and all other Trinity Wall Street policies, procedures, and rules.
- Perform all duties in a manner that promote Trinity’s mission and goals.
- Assume other related responsibilities and special projects as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- 5+ years of experience in advocacy, policy analysis, and organizing.
- Knowledge of at least one of the following issues: youth and education, housing and homelessness, mental health, and criminal justice reform.
- Familiarity with New York City faith-based organizations.
- Knowledge of the New York City and New York State political landscape and legislative and budget processes.
- Outgoing, self-starter, comfortable establishing new institutional relationships.
- Strong communication and coordination skills.
- Proficiency with word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, project management software, and advocacy technology tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively and manage multiple workstreams.
- Self-starter and proactive.
- Proficiency with social media.
Preferred:
- Experience working with Episcopal congregations.
- Familiarity with the social justice traditions of the Episcopal and Anglican Church.
- Work experience as a faith-based organizer and/or community organizer training.
REQUIRED AND PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CREDENTIALS
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
