Job Summary
Under general supervision, employees perform a variety of skilled duties in the maintenance, repair and servicing of buildings, facilities, operating equipment, electrical and mechanical systems. Facility Technicians A perform the more difficult and complex projects, including those that are of a non-routine and non-recurring nature. Facility Technicians may be assigned to perform any work generally assigned to Facility Technicians B or C or Porter in the Facilities Department. Shift subject to change per requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Facility Technician – Class A will perform tasks related to facilities, bus stops, equipment or systems including but not limited to programmable logic controllers (PLC), electrical and cabling systems, lighting systems, alarm/security systems, heating/air conditioning systems (HVAC), building/shop equipment and bus stop shelters. Typical assignments may include electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, painting, data/communications cabling, lock repair and welding. Some assignments involve the operation of light and medium-duty motorized vehicles and related equipment.

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and/or mechanical electrical trades; rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry and wood finishing; fresh water and waste water supply and drainage plumbing using galvanized, copper, and PVC pipe, including HVAC maintenance; concrete work, surface patching, and brick and masonry repair; surface preparation and application of paints appropriate to different internal and external surfaces. Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the fields of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and related building trades. Working knowledge of shop mathematics, uniform building codes, Americans with Disabilities (ADA) codes, National Fire Protection Act (NFPA) codes. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.

Ability to:Operate and maintain specialized tools used in HVAC, electrical, carpentry, plumbing and related building trades. Measure and calculate angles, lengths and volumes. Design, layout and prepare detailed sketches for building and related construction jobs. Read and interpret manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints. Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Prepare basic records and reports. Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and five (5) years of skilled journey level experience performing duties equivalent to those of a Facility Technician; Certificate/Diploma from an accredited College or University in a Facilities Maintenance course; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Proof of required education beyond high school, such as college transcripts, diplomas, and/or certificates may be required at time of employment.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • Possess a valid California Class C drivers license.
  • The ability to obtain a forklift license, Environmental Protection Agency Freon handling certification, and other licenses or certificates mandated by law.
  • Experience in a public transit agency or governmental setting is preferred.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk; hear, in person and by telephone, and hear equipment warnings and enunciators; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and move heavier loads with the assistance of equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, drawings and specifications; analyze and solve problems; use shop math and mathematical reasoning; work under deadlines with interruptions; and interact with District managers, employees, contractors, vendors and others encountered in the course of work.

While performing the duties of this class, the employee works under typical office conditions and the noise level is occasionally loud. The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions, near moving equipment, mechanical parts, buses and non-revenue vehicles, or vibration, on uneven slippery surfaces and/or is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and regularly works in shop facilities, where noise levels are moderately noisy and there is exposure to toxic fumes and caustic chemicals.
