Farm Technician
**Assigned to Farm of the Future and Rodeo**
Range 39
Hiring Range: $18.65 – $19.79 per hour
Full Range: $18.65 – $23.63 per hour
Schedule:
12 Months a year/25 Hours per week
Monday – Friday: 10:00am – 4:00pm
Actual work hours for this position may vary and may be required on occasion to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as necessary.
Position Duties
Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the Farm of the Future and Head Rodeo Coach, provide farming technical support as directed. Safely operate equipment and machinery related to the production and marketing of crops and livestock.
Reporting Relationship
This position will report directly to the Director of the Farm of the Future.
Distinguishing Career FeaturesThis position is responsible for the maintenance of instructional farm including irrigation, weed control, rodeo grounds and equipment operation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Guide student workers and student interns.
- Coordinate with the Director and Faculty in scheduling tasks and duties.
- Operate tractors and machinery in support of farming operations.
- Perform daily/weekly farm duties as assigned by the Director or Faculty.
- Perform farm tasks including irrigation, tractor operation, planting and harvesting.
- Provides care for and observes protocols for humane treatment of living specimens.
- Ensures the care of all livestock, equipment, and facilities.
- Cleans livestock and machinery areas.
- May perform minor servicing on farm equipment such as but not limited to lubricants, belts, and tension adjustments.
- Performs repairs on lab equipment.
- Implement approved safety practices.
- Set up and verify that classroom and laboratory equipment is operational.
- Assist students during laboratory exercises.
- Bilingual preferred but not required.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge and Skills
The position requires knowledge of the concepts associated agriculture, or related field of study. Requires working knowledge in the use of scientific and general instructional laboratory equipment including machinery. Requires basic knowledge of laboratory or workshop procedures, organization, equipment, tests, experiments, and simulations. Requires knowledge of safe and proper handling of harmful chemicals, substances, and hazardous wastes. Requires knowledge of basic inventory methods. Requires sufficient mathematics skill to make calculations such as metric weights and volumes, and percent. Requires sufficient knowledge of computers to use common desktop applications. Requires sufficient knowledge of the English language to prepare routine correspondence and instructions. Requires basic knowledge of tutoring techniques including students’ styles of learning. Requires sufficient human relation skills to guide students and student workers, and to convey technical concepts. Requires sensitivity to the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and abilities
Abilities
Requires the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position including set up laboratory assignments, experiments, simulations, tests, and student projects. Requires the ability to locate and identify regional plants, animals, and other specimens in the field. Requires the ability to assemble instructional equipment. Requires the ability to operate and perform minor repairs to laboratory machinery, equipment, and tools. Requires the ability to read and understand technical manuals. Must be able to maintain labs and equipment in working order. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of equipment. Must be able to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines and manage time effectively. Must be able to guide the activities of student workers. Requires the ability to complete required occupational safety and health training within a reasonable time. Requires the ability to work varying schedules including early mornings and evenings.
Physical Abilities
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors in a classroom/laboratory environment engaged in work of an active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and move medium weight materials up to 50 pounds, and move to work stations. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to setup experiments and use a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and labels and to observe students perform tests and assignments.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant safety considerations exist from physical labor, handling of medium weight, awkward materials, and chemicals. Must live within proximity.
Qualification
Education and Experience
The position may require an Associate’s degree in Biology, Agriculture, Horticulture or closely related discipline and one year of experience in agriculture. Additional experience may substitute for some higher education.
Licenses and Certificates
May require a valid driver’s license.
