Fellowship Advisor

Housed within Academic Affairs, the Office of Scholar Development & Fellowship Advising (SDFA) promotes academic excellence, engagement, and student thriving by empowering students to make the most of their experience at the University of Denver. Academic Affairs collaborates with the schools, divisions, academic departments, the faculty, and student life to develop programs, curricula, and experiences that support, inspire, and challenge students.

Established in 2022, SDFA supports students and recent graduates from across the university in their development as scholars through pursuit of nationally and internationally competitive awards. In collaboration with campus and community partners, we engage students through outreach and advising to help them identify and compete for external awards that provide pathways to scholarly, professional, and personal growth as well as impact within their chosen fields. We are focused on the value of the reflection and development that can result from thoughtful engagement with the reflection and discernment involved in the process of applying for competitive awards. With this in mind, we work with students to articulate their goals, values, and priorities along with their personal narrative and vision for impact.

Position Summary

The Fellowship Advisor will work closely with the Director as well as campus partners to raise awareness of external fellowship and scholarship opportunities among students, staff, and faculty at DU. The Fellowship Advisor will also contribute to SDFA outreach, communications, and recruitment; data management and application processes; organizing events to celebrate the work of applicants; and general office administrative and technical duties. For assigned competitions, the Fellowship Advisor will have primary responsibility for advising, essay feedback, and campus evaluations/endorsement letter-writing.
This position is a key partner and collaborator of the Director in a small and growing unit. The position works with numerous offices across the DU and interacts regularly with students, faculty and recent graduates in person and electronically. A strong commitment to and demonstrated track record of engagement with the principles of equity and inclusion are essential.

Essential Functions

Advising

  • Maintain a strong knowledge of fellowship and grant opportunities available, the value of the application process, and the profile each major competition seeks in applicants.
  • Utilize excellent interpersonal communication and relational skills to help students explore and identify interests, skills, and abilities and “good fit” fellowships. Engage in collaborative advising conversations with students to guide them through reflection and discernment.
  • Provide consistent group and individual advising for applicants to assigned competitions, with particular attention to holistic student development.

Outreach and Recruitment

  • Foster strategic partnerships across campus and beyond in order to conduct timely and effective outreach to diverse student populations.
  • Organize student-facing programming such as workshops, info sessions, and other events.

Communications and Program Management

  • Manage campus application processes for assigned competitions with a nomination component, including organizing faculty committees as needed.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of SDFA procedures and systems to accomplish program goals, including calendar and data management, website updates, and digital communications. Assist with implementation of Salesforce CRM and other tools to advance SDFA priorities.

  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Preferred but not required: commitment to at least two years in the role.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in advising, teaching, or related student-facing role in higher education.
  • Familiarity with nationally and internationally competitive awards in the context of higher education.
  • Experience building strong working relationships with colleagues in varying roles across a complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience applying for and/or advising students on nationally and internationally competitive fellowships such as Goldwater, Boren, Truman, Udall, Fulbright, etc.
  • Experience with data management and web design.
  • Experience developing and/or implementing strategic communications plans.
  • Experience writing for publication (academic, journalism, or PR).
  • Experience working with high-ability/high-achieving students.
  • Experience with other higher-education learning opportunities, such as undergraduate research, study abroad, advising for graduate and professional education, or community engagement.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The salary grade for the position is 7.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $50,000 – $55,000
