Remote Working: Onsite 90% / Remote 10% (sometimes working from home as much as 40% of the time over the course of a work week)
Position Level: The best fit candidate selected for this position will be offered a job title/level (Field Service Engineer I vs. Field Service Engineer II vs. Senior Field Service Engineer) that is most appropriate after evaluating the person’s education, experience, training, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

TRAVEL: Between 60-75% (almost entirely domestically, and rarely internationally)
EXPECTED PAY RANGE:
Field Service Engineer I $19.11 – $26.28
Field Service Engineer II $23.34 – $32.10
Senior Field Service Engineer $28.52 – $39.21
This pay range is for the position’s base pay only. This position may be eligible for other compensation including incentive pay and/or allowances. Candidates will receive additional information during the interview and selection process.
POSITION SUMMARY
Field Service Engineers (FSEs) are responsible for the installation, preventative maintenance (PM), and repair of Hitachi’s Electron Microscopes and supporting EM equipment at customer facilities. FSEs will spend 60-75% of their time in the field. FSEs will receive general instructions on normal daily work and more detailed instructions on new assignments. FSEs are required to attain additional trainings on specific models within their area to continually develop knowledge on general product lines. FSEs are required to effectively interface with customers and maintain positive relationships with customers, co-workers, and managers.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for addressing all service-related issues at customer sites
- Perform system installations at customer sites
- Provide user training during new equipment installations and other scheduled user training as needed
- Provides training to new FSEs as needed
- Maintain appropriate records of all work performed and training received
- Responsible for completing all field service documentation utilized for tracking system reliability and customer billing
- Complete all assigned formal training with a grade of eighty (80) or higher on the tests
- Complete all assigned on-the-job training (OJT) with instrument certification
- Answer service calls and return messages from customers in a manner meeting service department policies
- Set and keep appropriate schedules for service on the assigned equipment
- Maintain appropriate records of all work performed and training received
- Complete all required administrative tasks in a timely manner, i.e., timecard, expense reports, assigned trainings, etc.
- Participate in required training in order to attain knowledge on specific models or product lines
- Effectively interface with customers as well as maintaining a positive relationship with management and others
- Portray professionalism and pride in appearance while conforming to company policies
- Provide a positive attitude to all employees and customers
- Comply and adhere to company policies
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- AS degree in Electronics Engineering (or relevant field) or equivalent combination of education and experience
- BS degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred
EXPERIENCE, TRAVEL, and OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Experience using digital volt meters, oscilloscopes, hand tools, and computers
- Experience reading electrical schematics
- Experience disassembling and assembling intricate parts as related to selected instruments
- Eligible to be added to HTA’s insurance
- Must have and retain a valid driver’s license in resident State
- Be eligible to receive a company credit card
- Eligible to acquire a passport
- Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally between 60-75%
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
- Able to work from schematics using various test equipment and mathematical calculations specific to electronics
- Must possess electronics, mechanical, and computer skills
- Must possess equipment-specific operation skills.
- Ability to provide preventive maintenance (PM) and basic emergency service on several instruments within a product line
- Ability to install equipment and perform acceptance testing on specified instruments
- Ability to give basic customer training during an installation
- Ability to provide basic billable emergency service
- Ability to effectively interface with customers, service department personnel and others
- Ability to effectively communicate information to customers and management regarding service activities and schedules.
- Ability to manage and maintain traveling inventory according to department policy and procedure
- Knowledge of analog and digital circuitry as applied to our equipment
- Basic knowledge and understanding of physics and chemistry
- Demonstrated ability to follow general instructions
- Demonstrated ability to perform semi-routine service calls (emergency service, PM’s) on one or more models of instrumentation (measured by instrument certification)
- Demonstrated ability to perform acceptance testing and give Basic user Training on selected instruments
- Knowledge and understanding of mechanical principles
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities
- Ability to effectively communicate information to customers and management regarding service activities and schedules
- Ability to follow precise instructions
- Ability to perform service calls (PM and Repairs) on one or more models of a product line (measured by instrument certification)
- Ability to effectively interface with customers and service department personnel
- Ability to communicate (read, write, and speak) in English effectively
- Ability to communicate (read, write, and/or speak) in Japanese is a plus
- Ability to drive an automobile
- Ability to see small objects within a confined area
- Ability to identify and distinguish color-codes
- Ability to transport parts and toolbox from car to equipment site
