Job Summary
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications
This is an in-person position and is not eligible for remote work. This position has an anticipated work schedule of Wednesday – Saturday, 8:00am – 6:00pm, four 10-hour days, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.
Under the direction of a Wildland Fire Supervisor and is responsible for performing pre-suppression, fire prevention and wildland fire suppression activities for El Paso County Sherriff’s Office (EPSO). The wildland fire management unit provides regional support for fires throughout the season and performs initial and extended attack firefighting.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Operates all types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment and emergency medical equipment.
- Preserves evidence at fire scenes.
- Performs search and rescue of individuals in hazardous environments including collapsed buildings, auto accidents, hazardous material spills and confined spaces.
- Deploys on fire assignments.
- Performs wildfire suppression including cutting fire lines, using engines and hand tools to suppress fires.
- Performs wildfire mitigation of trees, brush or dead and downed woody material that including thinning, removing, chipping, pruning, limbing, felling, and bucking.
- Maintains accurate vehicle maintenance record books.
- Maintains accurate Crew Time Reports (CTR) daily as requested by supervisor.
- Performs general facility maintenance.
- Participates in interagency assignments outside of El Paso County,
- Supports the Sheriff’s Office strategic plan.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of with mitigation tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of working with wildland fire equipment and tools including pumps, power saws, aircraft, radios, and hand tools.
- Capable of performing strenuous outdoor work safely and productively.
- Ability to interact tactfully with the public.
- Ability to operate a manual transmission vehicle.
- Successfully complete “Arduous” Work Capacity Test (pack test, 3 miles 45lbs pack in 45 minutes).
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with government employees, contractors, fire protection districts and the public.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of employment.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Minimum one or more seasons as a Fire Fighter 2 (FFT2).
Licenses/Certificates:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification including S-130 and S-190 training required prior to date of hire.
- Certificate of course completion for ICS-700 and ICS-100 must be obtained within one year of employment.
- Must obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Compliance within six months of employment.
- Current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2): S-131, S-212, S-260, and S-290 trainings preferred.
- Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License or Colorado State IFSAC Driver Operator Pumper preferred.
- Advanced First Aid and CPR certifications preferred.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Must pass background investigation, truth verification examination, drug screen, motor vehicle record check, and physical examination.
Work Conditions
Duties require extreme physical exertion, working outdoors in all terrain and weather conditions, working long hours, and for extended periods of time. Potential for working in stressful and dangerous situations, including steep terrain, inclement weather, hazardous traffic, exposure to smoke, flame, hazardous materials, and biohazards. Ability to work long hours with the possibility of being absent from home for consecutive days or more. Must be able to carry up to 45 lbs, run, bend, twist, walk and/or climb. Must be able to safely lift and transport 45 lbs over flat terrain for 3 miles in less than 45 minutes. All fire personnel are required to wear safety clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during regular work hours and while firefighting. Must be able to report to the Emergency Services Section Building within one hour when on call.
