2 days per week
4 hours per day

Under specified supervision, monitors the fitness area and provides fitness equipment orientation sessions at one of the Recreation facilities.

Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.

Fitness Attendant I:
Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level class in the Fitness Attendant series. Incumbents entering this class have limited related work experience.

Fitness Attendant II:
Under direction, this is the journey-level class in the Fitness Attendant series.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Monitors the fitness area and equipment.

Provides maintenance reports on damaged equipment.

Demonstrates to patrons the correct usage of various equipment.

Keeps all equipment and fitness areas clean.

Enforces safety standards and facility policies and rules.

Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.

Reports all issues and/or concerns to a supervisor or management staff.

Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.

Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Fitness Attendant I:
Requires a high school diploma or GED.

Fitness Attendant II:
Requires a high school diploma or GED.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Fitness Attendant I:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 30 days of hire.

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.

Fitness Attendant II:
In addition to the above requirements:
Fitness certification with American Council of Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or other accredited certification program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of athletic training, including anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and weight training injury treatment.
Knowledge of weight machines, free weights, step machines, treadmills, and rowing machines.
Skill in teaching the use of a variety of fitness equipment.
Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with the public.
Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.
Ability to work with the public.
Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays, or flexible schedules.
Ability to work well with others.
Ability to read, understand, and apply instructions.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions appropriately.
Ability to work in a high usage, leisure facility environment.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform light lifting. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions. The employee must also be able to physically demonstrate all weight training exercises and the use of all cardiovascular equipment, and must be able to lift 50 pounds repetitively.
